5.0 Actual procedure Followed:

After getting topic from Shri.V.B.Rajnoor Lecturer of ASU subject. We search
about it on internet. We gathered necessary components /Information. Then we
collected the survey instruments. We performed actual field survey near
bhairavnath mandir. Finally our microproject is completed as per MSBTE rules
and regulation.

6.0 Skill Developed:

• We get knowledge about different methods of plane table surveying.
• We get the knowledge about different instruments used during plane table
surveying.
• Learn the inner details of the applications of plane table and their
advantages and limitations.
• Wet get knowledge about close traverse survey.

➢ PART B-Plan

7.0 Need of Advanced Surveying :

• Advanced Surveying is used in building Construction, road, bridges,
railway,etc.
• It addresses the latest techniques of surveying needed in construction
applications, including alignment, bearing & levelling and provide
guidance on all aspects of survey.
• Advanced surveying deals with the faster, economical & more reliable
surveying and its practical applications.
• To identify and comprehend ideas connected to Advanced Surveying.
• To achieve economy in surveying & construction.

8.0 Introduction of topic:-

--Prepare a report on 5 sided close traverse survey using plane table --

1.Closed traverse surveying:-

A closed traverse is a series of connected lines whose lengths and bearings are
measured off these lines (or sides), which enclose an area. A close traverse can be
used to show the shape of the perimeter of a construction.

2.Methods of Plan table surveying:-

I)Traversing Method.

Traversing is the connection of series of straight lines. In the case of traversing,

the plane table is located at one point for supposing A as shown below. From that
point sight towards B and measure the distance AB. Then shift the plane table to
point B and sight towards A and measure BA. The average distance of AB and Ba
are plotted to scale in the drawing sheet. Then Sight the point C from B and
measure BC and repeat the same procedure until the last point. Conduct some
checks at some points. Finally, traverse lines are plotted on the drawing sheet.
page 7

3.Terms Used in Plane Table Surveying.

1. Centering
Centering is the process of setting up plane table in such a way that the plotted
position ‘o’ on the drawing sheet corresponding to the ground station ‘O’ is
exactly over the station.
2. Orientation
It is the alignment of plane table by rotating it in the horizontal plane so that all
the plotted lines are parallel to the corresponding ground lines. It is done by using
a trough compass by back sighting or resection.
3. Back Sight
Back sight is taken from the plane table station to another station whose position
is known and is already been plotted on the drawing sheet. It is a method of
orientation of plane table.
4. Fore Sight
Fore sight is taken from the plane table station to another station whose position
has not been marked on the drawing sheet.

4.Equipments for Plane Table Surveying

The following accessories are required to carry out plane table survey:

1. Alidade
2. Plumbing fork with plumb bob
3. Spirit level
4. Trough compass
5. Drawing sheets and accessories for drawing.
page 8

1. Alidade
It is a straight edge ruler having some form of sighting device. One edge of the
ruler is bevelled and is graduated. Always this edge is used for drawing line of
sight. Depending on the type of line of sight there are two types of alidade:

(a) Plain alidade , (b) Telescopic alidade

Plain alidade

2. Plumbing Fork and Plumb Bob

Figure 7 shows a typical plumbing fork with a plum bob. Plumbing fork is a U-
shaped metal frame with an upper horizontal arm and a lower inclined arm. The
upper arm is provided with a pointer at the end while the lower arm is provided
with a hook to suspend the plumb bob. When the plumbing fork is kept on the
plane table the vertical line (line of plumb bob) passes through the pointed edge
of upper arm. The plumb bob helps in transferring the ground point to the drawing
sheet and vice versa also.

3. Spirit Level

A flat based spirit level is used to level the plane table during surveying. To get
perfect level, spirit level should show central position for bubble tube when
checked with its positions in any two mutually perpendicular directions.

Sprit Level.

4. Trough Compass
It consists of a 80 to 150 mm long and 30 mm wide box carrying a freely
suspended needle at its centre. At the ends of the needle graduations are marked
on the box to indicate zero to five degrees on either side of the centre. The box is
provided with glass top to prevent oscillation of the needle by wind. When needle
is centred (reading 0–0), the line of needle is parallel to the edge of the box. Hence
marking on the edges in this state indicates magnetic north–south direction.

5. Drawing Sheet and Accessories for Drawing.

A good quality, seasoned drawing sheet should be used for plane table surveying.
The drawing sheet may be rolled when not in use, but should never is folded. For
important works fibre glass sheets or paper backed with thin aluminum sheets are
used. Clips clamps, adhesive tapes may be used for fixing drawing sheet to the
plane table. Sharp hard pencil, good quality eraser, pencil cutter and sand paper
to keep pencil point sharp are other accessories required for the drawing work. If
necessary, plastic sheet should be carried to cover the drawing sheet from rain and
dust.

9.0 Practical:
5 sided close traverse survey using plane table surveying by traversing method.

I) Resources required.

Sr.No. Particulars Specification Quantity

1. Plane Table Good quality drawing board. 1
2. Plane Alidade Metallic. 1
3. Spirit level Tubular level. 1
4. Trough 15cm. long provided with magnetic needle. 1

5. U-frame or Haripin-shaped brass frame having two arms of 1
plumbing equal length.
fork.
6. Drawing sheet Good quality drawing sheet. 1

7. Clamps Clamps of suitable size. 4

II) Procedure.
1. Collect the required instruments as per resources required table.
2. Select the station points A, B, C, D and E in such a way that adjoining stations
are intervisible from the instrument station.
3. Set up the plane table over the station A and perform temporary adjustment i.e.
levelling and centering of the table. Mark north direction with trough compass at
right top corner. Simultaneously Transfer Station A from ground to sheet as ‘a’.
4. With alidade touching station ‘a’, bisect the ranging rod at station B. Measure
distance AB on ground and mark the position ‘b’ on drawing sheet.
5. Shift the instrument at station B and perform temporary adjustment and
orientation by back sighting or magnetic meridian method. And continue the same
procedure at C, D and E.
6. Return the instrument to survey store.
page 11

III) Precautions to be followed.

1. Ground points should be transferred accurately on drawing sheet and mark with
small alphabets.
2. Perform temporary adjustment accurately.
3. Alidade should be properly placed while bisecting the objects.
4. Measure the distance on ground correctly.
5. Take suitable scale for plotting.
6. Perform survey during dry weather.

IV) Observations
Sr.No. Line On sheet (cm) On ground (m) Error
1. PQ 21.60 21.77 +0.17
2. QR 12.00 11.57 -0.43
3. RS 21.60 21.70 +0.10
4. SP 12.00 11.60 -0.40
CUMULATIVE ERROR =-0.56

Fig. On ground sheet.

V) Result
Difference between distance on sheet and distance on ground i.e. cumulative error
is -0.56

VI) Interpretation of result

The error found in distance on sheet and distance on ground is not so much.

VII) Conclusion
i. This method of survey is not much accurate.
ii. Man made errors may occur in this type of survey.
iii. This survey is not much very accurate.
