ABSTRACT:
A fixed beam is supported between two fixed ends. It is also
called fixed-end beam or built-in beam or restrained beam. It is
classified as a statically indeterminate beam, which involves more
than three unknowns and the equilibrium equations of statics
alone are not sufficient to determine the support reactions. It
involves four unknowns and requires consideration of the
deflection of the beam to find the additional unknown.

INTRODUCTION:

A fixed beam is supported between two fixed ends. It is also called fixed
end- beam or built -in beam or restrained beam. It is classified as
statically indeterminate beam which involves more than three unknown
and the equilibrium equation of statics alone are not sufficient to
determine the support reactions. It involves four unknown and requires
considerations of the deflection of the beam to find the additional
unknown. A fixed beam with reaction at the support end is shown in fig.

Each support end consists of three reactions: two reactive forces and
one reactive moment produce because of prevention of free rotation of
the end The reaction at A includes forces HA & HV and moment MA and
reaction at B include forces HB and VB and moment MB .MA and MB
are called fixing end moments. In case of only vertical load acting on the
beam, both HA and HB are zero, and they only appear when inclined load
acts on the beam.

6
APPLICATION OF FIXED BEAM:

Fixed beams provide sturdiness to the structure. They are used to

withstand both horizontal and vertical forces. Installing them in a sloppy
roof of a house is how you can put them to the best use. All of the
strength of such a structural element comes from two load-bearing fixed
ends.

FIXED BEAM WITH UDL:

 The bending moment diagram for fixed beam subjected to udl throughout the span
is as shown

 The maximum bending moment is given as, wl2/8.

 Point of contraflexure in a beam is a point at which the bending moment
changes its sign from positive to negative and vice versa.
 The point of contraflexure lies at a distance of L/ (2√3) from either end of the beam.
7
DEFLECTION OF FIXED BEAM:
Deflection at the center of a fixed – fixed beam carrying a point load at
the center = 0.25 × deflection of the simply supported beam carrying a
point load at the center.

ADVANTAGE OF FIXED BEAM:

 It is practicality rigid to maintain the two edges of the beam at exactly the
identical level.
 Any subsidence of one of the staff, however diminutive it may be, will set up
notable stress.
 Heat variations also produce big stresses in a fixed beam.

BENEFITS OF FIXED BEAM:

 For the same loading, the highest deflection of a fixed beam is less than
that of a commonly supported beam.
 For the same loading, the fixed beam is subjected to a lesser maximum turning
moment.
 The slope at both edges of a fixed beam is zero.

8
PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF FIXED BEAM:

Fixed beams provide sturdiness to the structure. They are used to withstand both
horizontal and vertical forces. Installing them in a sloppy roof of a house is how
you can put them to the best use. All of the strength of such a structural
element comes from two load-bearing fixed ends.

FIXED BEAM IN USED IN CONSTRUCTION:

A fixed beam is one that is fixed on both ends of the beam with supports.
This type of beam does not allow for bending moment production and will not
have any vertical movement or rotation. Fixed beams are most frequently used
in trusses and similar structures.
