Instructions: Provide three (3) contemporary art forms that can be found in your local community and
provide a brief background for each.
Then, choose only one (1) art form that you prefer the most. Draw or cut a sample picture of your chosen art
form then paste it in the box and answer the guide questions provided below.

ART FORM 1

Performing Arts

The gong is a percussion instrument found in music throughout Southeast Asia. In Mindanao, the second
largest island in the Philippines, and Zamboanga City particularly, the gong is used in many folk dance routines
reflecting the international flavor of its ancestry. When played, it is suspended from the rim and struck on the
center piece, called a "boss," with a wooden beater that has a cork head. Changes in pitch are achieved by
shaving down either the boss or the rim of the instrument.

Applied Arts

The weaving of yakan’s, the weaving are inspired by patterns and the weaving of Yakan uses fiber from used
pineapple plants and abacca for basic materials and herbalextracts from leavesL, tree barks and roots as dyes.
A square foot of weaving could fetch a hefty price of Php 400 to Php 1500 depending on the intricacy.
ART FORM 3

Visual Art

“Mindanao steel life,” one of his most famous works, is a 101.5 cm x 80 cm mixed media art painting depicting
images from his perception of what has been happening in his home province. Durian and mangosteen fruits
become hand grenades, in this painting, and an attack helicopter transforms into a dragonfly, while a water
buffalo morphs into a tank. This work is an example of how Tawasil makes clever use of his imagination to
enable even mundane things to reflect the violent imagery of war.

Because my mother grandmother do this for living and I also want to learn it to help my family make money.

Because it’s an art that is made and produced by artist living today.

Because it’s in our culture and a lot in our community do this for living.

4. How much influence does it have in your community?

I think it pretty much influence everyone in our community because it’s in our culture and our grandparent
always teaches kids to weave so that we can pass it down to the next generation.
