EDUCATION 472 STRATEGY INSTRUCTION LOG TEMPLATE (INCLUSION)

DATE OF STRATEGY LESSON: 10/20

TOPIC AREA: Summarizing information
GROUPING: One-to-one strategy
STRATEGY USED: Summarize to tell a story in your own words (SWBST strategy)
RATIONALE and CONNECTION TO MARZANO’S TOP NINE:
The student I taught this strategy to was having difficulties in English class to summarize parts of
a story in their own words. This strategy walks students through five essential parts to consider
when summarizing a chunk of information and can help organize thoughts. The element of
Marzano’s Top Nine that this strategy directly connects to is summarizing and notetaking. The
student is learning how to effectively summarize information when reading, which can carry
over into every subject as well.

PA COMMON CORE STANDARDS and/or IEP GOAL:

CC.1.2.2.B- Ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to
demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

STEP-BY-STEP EXPLICIT DIRECTIONS PROVIDED TO STUDENT(S):

-I provided the student with a visual representation of the acronym SWBST which defined each
letter as S-Somebody-who is the main character, W-Wanted-what did the main character want?,
B-but what was the problem?, S-so-how did the main character solve this problem?, T-then-how
did the story end?
-I then explained to the student that this strategy will help them summarize a story or passage.
-I will walk through each acronym on the poster with the student. I will explain each and state
that after reading a passage, they can use each acronym in order to effectively summarize in their
own words.
-I will provide the student with a short passage and allow them to read it. After they are done, I
will walk through the strategy with them and have them practice summarizing using the visual I
provided at the beginning.

RESULTS OF THE STRATEGY: The student was able to effectively write a short summary
of the passage provided using the strategy. I believe that the strategy was effective because the
student independently answered the summary question by referring back to the visual.
PERSONAL REFLECTION:
I believe that this strategy was beneficial to the student and they were able to follow along with
the passage and summarize with ease. The student was eager to implement the strategy and it is
one that can be carried across all subject areas.
