Qri Word Recognition
WORD LISTS:
When administering the word lists to JJ, I began with Pre-Primer 1. On this list, he
identified 17/17 words automatically and received a 100%, which placed him in the independent
level. Next, he identified 20/20 words automatically on Pre-Primer ⅔ and placed in the
independent category as well. Going from here, I administered the Primer word list. JJ
identified 18/20 words automatically, and identified 2/20 words including “special” and “live”
taking longer to identify. Under the “First” word list, he identified 19/20 words automatically
and incorrectly identified the word “thought” as “though”. Under these two word lists, JJ
qualified for the independent level overall. Next, I administered the Second level word lists.
This is where I began to see some more struggling with identification. He identified 9/20 words
automatically, and 5/20 words just identified. He read the word “excited” as “exited”, “breath” as
“breath”, and omitted three words completely including pieces, suit, and weather. Overall, on
this word list he scored a 70%, which places him under the instructional category. Next, I
administered the Third level word list. Identified 1/20 words automatically including the word
“wool”. He identified 6 words correctly and completely omitted the rest of the words on the list.
Overall, his score on this level is a 7/20 (35%) placing him into the frustration level. I decided
to stop at this level due to the fact that this was his frustration level and I found his instructional
PASSAGES:
By scoring JJ’s word lists and viewing that he falls under the instructional category at
Level Two, I administered Level Two passages to him. First, I administered the Level Two
narrative passage titled “The Family’s First Trip”. JJ’s total number of word recognition misuse
in this passage was 21. The number of meaning changing miscues was 2. These included
changing the word “excited” to exited, and “was planning” to “planned”. He omitted 7 words
total while reading the passage. This in turn affected his overall comprehension of the passage,
which I will further discuss in that section. Overall on the narrative passage, JJ landed placed in
the instructional category based on his miscues. The Level Two passage that I had JJ read in in
the expository category is titled “Whales and Fish”. He had a total of 12 word recognition
miscues in this passage, 1 of them being meaning changing. For this expository passage, JJ
placed under the Instructional category based off of his word recognition and miscues.
