Unit VI Essay: Fire Inspection

An outline of the responsibilities of the fire inspector. Be sure to describe why it is

important to have properly trained fire inspectors.

Fire inspectors are given the role of inspecting hazards in buildings and ensuring that the

federal, as well as local fire codes, are appropriately followed. The inspectors work both in office

settings as well as in the field. Their operations are usually done during regular business hours

although in some cases they are expected to work in odd hours in the event some emergencies

require their attendance (Agarwal et al., 2020). Those given the roles of forecasting events tend

to work in odd hours to detect any irregularities and adherence to fire codes by buildings.

Fire inspectors require adequate training since their career is dependent on people's lives

and any faults can result in significant damages (Srinivasan, 2018). They should be able to

appropriately look for fire hazards and work on them appropriately. They need to understand fire

codes and ensure buildings follow the set guidelines. They further should be able to conduct

follow-ups to ensure that the requirements have been met (Agarwal et al., 2020). They further

should have the proper training to be able to conduct safety programs and do appropriate fire

inspections on the files (Srinivasan, 2018). They further have the role of providing businesses

with bur permits and have well-laid plans for the monitored control burns.

Explain what professional qualifications and standards are required in their

position and their importance.

The fire inspector is expected to meet certain qualifications to be deemed fit for the

positions which they are given. The inspector is expected to be professional as well as well

trained to deal with issues at hand. They are needed to have licensed from an enforcement

agency with a further concentration of model cases from such groups as the international

building code or the proper documentation from the national fire protection association

(Srinivasan, 2018). These documentations are important to ensure that those given the role

understand what is expected of them and what they should do to ensure proper adherence to the

set codes is maintained (Srinivasan, 2018). Fire inspectors are also required in some cases to

testify in courts and without these adherences, there is an expectation that they might fail if not

well trained and certified.

Compare and contrast the training and certification from the interview with

national standards.

From the interview with the fire inspector, the training and certification were well in line

with the set standards for the position. The inspector had a degree in fire science with a credible

record and was further certified by the national fire protection association. This was in line with

set guidelines and the industry standards.

Discuss the allied organizations with which they work.

The fire inspectors work together with the law enforcement agencies, the regulation

boards such as the national fire protection association, and the courts where the cases require

legal interventions (Srinivasan, 2018). This places them in the middle of different intervention

agencies to ensure that the codes are appropriately followed by the buildings and organizations in

charge (Srinivasan, 2018).

Summarize what you learned in your interview.

From the interview, I came to learn that fire inspectors have a diverse role in defining

which is the best position to follow in ensuring that the buildings follow the preset codes. Their

roles are cemented by the support of legal enforcement agencies and the regulatory authorities.

They are further expected to be professionals and follow the guidelines of the employers and the

federal government.

Share an experience that you perfectly coordinated and how was the experience?

One experience was when we were assessing a building where a fire had caused three top

buildings to go up in flames. Through the analysis, we found loose gas cables which were

interconnected within the three buildings.

Have you helped or coached someone?

Yes, I have had several interns work under me and they came out very successful with

some of them landing jobs in the same field.

In your opinion, what is the key to creating a good team?

The first step is collaboration and important of all is understanding the codes and how

they should be enforced,

What are your qualifications?

I have a degree in fire safety and have an accreditation status from the national fire safety

association.

Is there a case where you had to provide emergency medical services while in the

line of work?

Yes. In one case, a child was trapped inside a house on fire and me and my team had to

do emergency resuscitation which ended up saving her life. I am proud of the experience.

Is there a case where you had to organize a diverse group to accomplish a task?

Yes. In one case, we had to assess a multi-billion company and this required the services

from many departments owing to the scope of analysis. With proper collaboration, we were able

to come up with a plan to help the complainants and file a court case against the company.
