(c) Most elements exist naturally as a mixture of isotopes, each with their own relative isotopic
mass. The mass spectrum of an element reveals the abundances of these isotopes, which can
be used to calculate the relative atomic mass of the element.
Magnesium has three stable isotopes. Information about two of these isotopes is given.

The relative atomic mass of magnesium is 24.3

Calculate percentage abundance and hence the relative isotopic mass of the
third isotope of magnesium. Give your answer to three significant figures.

Percentage abundance = ................................

Isotopic mass = .............................. [3]

(f) A student analysed a sample of water from a disused mine to find out which metal ions
were in the water.

He used paper chromatography of the sample of water from the mine and of solutions
containing known metal ions.

The results he obtained are shown in the diagram.

Spots obtained by chromatography can be compared by their Rt

Show the formula for calculating Rf Value.

(i) Use the diagram of the results to help you to complete the table. Include the units.

[2]

(ii) Use the values you recorded in the table to calculate the Rt value for spot X.
