Question 1
a. The electromagnetic spectrum ranges from high energy gamma radiation to long wavelength radio
waves.
b. A well-defined part of the electromagnetic spectrum, in the wavelength range 400 nm to 700 nm is the
visible light.
c. The range of the spectrum with wavelengths less than 400 nm is called ultra-violet (UV) while the range
with wavelengths more than 700 nm is called infra-red (IR).
Question 2
1. The electromagnetic wave is a transverse wave which consists of electric and magnetic vibrations.
2. The electric field is always perpendicular to the magnetic field.
3. The two fields vary sinusoidally with the same frequency and in phase with each other
4. The electric and magnetic fields E and B are always perpendicular to the direction of propagation of
the wave.
5. The cross product E × B always gives the direction of travel of the wave.
Question 3
Frequency does not change when electromagnetic wave travels from one medium to another, but the
wavelength of the wave will change as it travels from one medium to another.
Question 4 : D
Question 5 : A
