Take some time to watch/listen to the talk on Instructional technologies-Changing teaching

and learning by Eric Simon. When you are done, write a one-page reflection paper on the
central points discussed. Would you agree with Eric Simon on the concepts and issues being
discussed? Why or why not?

Instructional technology is widely used throughout the world to promote quality and higher
education. We saw how technologies evolve and how they change our lives. Evolution
happened in a way that education has occurred in the classroom or our education. Educational
capacities tend to be pushed to greater levels by technological advancements. As technology
evolves, a teacher’s capacities will expand with new advancements, and a teacher who is
unaware of these developments and capabilities risks being left behind. The impact of
technological advancements on education will surely alter the way we learn. Before, studying
was solely a book-and-board interaction between student and teacher. However, different
forms of educational technologies are being improved and invented to help learners and
teachers make learning more convenient and easier. We experience and see how change
occurs over time. The introduction of new instructional technologies really changes the way
that education has been done. Regardless of the benefits of instructional technology, the
importance of teacher and student perspectives in implementing technology integration must
be considered. In addition, technology, particularly internet resources, can be used to aid both
the instructor and the student in their teaching and learning.

We should also consider that the particular adaptation of different instructional technologies
must be advantageous for the improvement of higher education, otherwise it would not have
been selected for it to be successfully produced. We, the users, should also evaluate and ask
ourselves what advantages these advancements give us. Instructional technology must
represent an adaptation that should improve teaching and learning. For example, since the
pandemic started, our lives have been affected, especially our educational system. Distance
learning technologies are really helpful in conveying messages and instructions through
distance learning. Teachers and students use technology to communicate, and the learning still
paves the way despite the pandemic. Nonetheless, incorporating technology into education
does not imply that students will receive a thorough and relevant education. It is highly
dependent on the communication between the teacher and the student, and also on the
method of teaching and learning. Through instructional technology, it will make the learning
and teaching more interactive and effective for the students. Teachers are no longer
constrained to traditional assessment techniques because of the advancement of instructional
technology. They can now analyze students’ development in actuality by communicating with
them in the learning process.
According to Eric Simon, there are three reasons why instructional technology is widely used
throughout the world. The first reason is that instructional technologies represent a significant
convenience over what we have been doing in the past. It is convenient in a way that teachers’
work will be less of a hassle because of these technologies. Instead of purchasing chalk,
markers, and other materials to create visual aids, technology will help teachers save money by
improving their instructional materials. Nowadays, instead of printing and spending money on
materials, they will just use projectors, computers, ebooks, etc. As their source of information. It
means that it’s a powerful tool that may dramatically enhance teachers’ effectiveness while
also keeping students engaged. Technology, like any other instrument, requires a thoughtful,
holistic approach. The second reason is the matter of accessibility. Instructional technology
must be used to learn things, communicate and find information easily. All of this technology
has allowed people to communicate, and people can stay in touch with each other at any time.
Furthermore, surfing the internet isn’t really an issue. You can do so at any time using any of
the connected devices available. Students are digital natives, wherein they are born culturally
based on interactive multimedia, while teachers are digital immigrants who had to adapt to
technology based on interactive multimedia. Students approach learning differently, and we
observed that technologies are part of their learning nowadays. Specifically, technology has
transformed the world into a globalized world in which effective and rapid communication is no
longer a distant dream. The last reason is that instructional technologies represent significant
pedagogical improvements. It allows the teachers and students to do something they could not
do before. There are improvements in education that really help the teaching and learning
process, and that’s the reason that we must embrace technology. However, despite these
advantages, there are also dark sides to using technology. Sometimes it’s already being used
inappropriately by the students. That’s why teachers and parents should always guide their
students not to overuse it. It is critical that learning comes first, and that technology serves
students rather than distracts them. Therefore, I definitely agree with Eric Simon’s discussion.
