QUARTER 1
MODULE 5 LESSON 5
Use Mathematical Concept and Techniques
OBJECTIVES:

1.Identify the four fundamental operations,

2. Perform the four fundamental operations.

DISCUSSION
ADDITION

The act of adding two or more thing/numbers.

PARTS

ADDENDS – It refer to wo or more numbers being added.

SUM – It is the result of the addition, in total.

EXAMPLE:

2+8=10

Where 2 and 8 are addends, 8 is the sum.

SUBSTRACTION

It is the inverse of addition. It is taking away something from another.

PARTS

MINUEND – It is the number where the second number is subtracted from.

SUBTRAHEND – It is the number being subtracted.
DIFFERENCE – It is the result of subtraction or also known as the reminder.

EXAMPLE:

10-8=2

Where 10 is the minuend, 8 is the subtrahend and 2 is the difference.

MULTIPLICATION

The process of combining matrices, vectors or other quantities under specific rules to
obtain their product.

PARTS

FACTORS- These are numbers you can multiply together to get another number.
PRODUCT – It is the result of multiplication.

EXAMPLE:

5 X 2=10

Where 5 and 2 are factors and 10 is the product.

DIVISION

The operation of determining how many times one quantity is contained in another, the
inverse of multiplication.

PARTS

DIVIDEND – It is the number that is divided by another number in a division.

DIVISOR – It is the number used to divide.
QUOTIENT – It is the result of division.
REMAINDER – It is a part that is left over.

EXAMPLE:

10÷3= 3 (r1)

Where 10 is the dividend, 3 is the divisor, 3 is the quotient and 1 is the remainder.

MDAS – Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

PEMDAS- Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

Activity:#11

Find the value of:

1. 501 × 10 = ?

2. 6 × 1000 = ?

3. (5 × 15) × 100 = ?

4. 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 4 × ?

5. Express the following repeated subtraction as division fact:

36 - 12 - 12 - 12 = 0
