Course Description
The course English – 1 is designed for students to think critically and prepare documents effectively such
as paragraphs. letters of formal and informal nature, essay writing etc. In addition to this, short stories are
added in order to help and foster critical thinking among pupils.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course the students will be able to demonstrate:
1. Knowledge of the basics of English grammar and composition
2. Application of the acquired knowledge of grammar and composition in different
situations
3. Understanding to develop proficiency in the art of effective reading and writing skills
Course Outcomes
Students will be able to
define and identify parts of speech
distinguish between various forms of sentences
analyze various sentence structures
make various types of sentences
Comprehension (skimming and scanning – headway comprehension passages)
understand and apply the process of writing
learn the basics of paragraph writing
differentiate between the topic sentence and supporting ideas
understand the difference between formal and informal language (examples various types
of writing), colloquial/slangs, expressions (invitation, regret, apologise)
write autobiographies of living and non-living things
write formal and informal dialogues
compose formal and informal letters of apology
to focus on making small talk and understand the technique of turn taking
