Secret of the Lake A tó titka
Chapter One
It is night. Helena, my wife, is sleeping in the other room. I can't fall asleep myself and so I have
decided to write down what has been bothering me now for a long time. One day, three years ago, I
was strolling home from work along the shore of the nearby lake. It was winter and it was cold.
Everything was frozen. I had walked that distance hundreds of times, but that time I noticed far
away from the bank a shimmer on the surface of the ice-covered water. Some incomprehensible
feeling didn't let me look elsewhere, and I found myself walking towards the light. I started to hear
inviting voices from nowhere. Some angelic voice led me to go towards the middle of the lake. The
outside world didn't exist and there was nobody around. I just went on and on and then I felt the ice
begin to crack under me. I tried to get back towards the bank, but I failed. Suddenly, everything was
dark around me and I felt that I was sinking and that the water went over the top of my head. When
I regained conscience again, I found myself lying in a beautiful garden under leafy trees and my
clothes were dry. I thought I had died and awoken in Heaven.
A beautiful young girl moved next to me and sat down in the grass. She had golden hair and blue
eyes. She was a typically ideal sight, perfect. I didn't understand what was happening and my first
reaction was to recoil. The girl started to speak to me calmly:
“Don't be afraid.”
“Where am I? Is this perhaps Heaven and are you an angel? I don't understand anything.”
“But I didn't want to throw myself into the lake at all. Something forced me. I heard voices.”
“It was you who forced me ... but ... you... This is evil! Leave me alone!”
I pulled away and I lifted my hand to strike. For a moment my mind clouded over but I only
grasped at the air when I wanted to hit her.
“Don't judge so hastily! You can't get far with that tone in this place! You didn't die... and if only
this place was Heaven! You see this so as not to fear me.”
“What?”
“If we met by other means, there would be no chance for us to have a conversation.”
“I am the ghost of the girl who was killed by her lover last month and was thrown into the lake in
a bag. Nobody knows anything about this yet because the ice has covered everything."
“I too couldn't believe that the one who loved Yvette would be able to do such a thing, but what's
done is done. The perfect crime.”
“I ask you to uncover the truth and convict the murderer for what he did.”
“I would think that I have eaten something bad or... and I fainted on the way because of food
poisoning.”
“Why are you showing me this? How does it concern me? I agree, it is tragic, but what can I do?”
“The murderer is in contact with you. I feel it on you! He is close to you every day.”
“I have never seen this man before!”
“You can't give Yvette her life back, but you can get her killer caught.”
“Amen to that!”
As I said that, it seemed that I awakened and I found myself on the lake shore again. It was
beginning to get dark. My clothes were not at all wet. I was bewildered by what I thought I had
experienced - it was so unbelievable that I fled from the place. I opened a bottle of whisky at home
and tried to calm down. I don't usually drink, but I thought I must have been too tired and I had gone
mad.
munkából hazafelé bandukoltam a közeli tóparton. Tél volt és hideg. Minden megfagyott a szabad ég
felületén a parttól jó messze csillogásra lettem figyelmes.
Hangokat
kezdtem hallani a semmiből, amelyek hívogattak. Valami angyali hang késztetett a tó közepe felé.
A lány megnyugtató módon szólt hozzám:
- Ne félj!
- Hol vagyok?
bárcsak a Menny lenne!
bedobott a tóba.
A tökéletes bűntény.
- Azt gondolnám, talán rosszat ettem, vagy mi... és biztosan elájultam útközben az
ételmérgezéstől...
- Micsoda…? Ne légy ilyen! Fájni fog, ha beléd csípek.
A lány hozzám ért és ezúttal éreztem a fizikai jelenlétét. Valóban fájt, ahogy megcsípett. Közben
pedig rémlátomásaim voltak. Láttam a férfit, ahogy a zsákot a tóba dobja.
The next day I didn't pay much attention to the matter and decided that I would not go past the
lake on my way to work, but take a detour instead. I also started off earlier, but the bus I chose,
instead of the usual service, broke down on the way. As I got off I saw the car of a dear friend of
mine on the road. He also noticed me and offered me a ride. Since it was late and we were both in a
hurry, he also went along the lake. This was not what I would have chosen, but I didn't want to make
a fool of myself and so I didn't protest.
As we passed with the car and the great stretch of water appeared, I heard the sweet voice again.
I really didn't want to look out the window and also the shade of the passing trees bothered me in
the sunshine. In an instant darkness started to surround me again and it was followed by nausea. In
the wink of an eye I found myself in the garden and the girl stood in front of me with a knife.
“I only ask for your help until the ice melts. It would be all the same after that.”
“And?”
“See, you have no chance to resist. You have to come in this direction. Until spring I will
hypnotize you every day if you don't help me.”
“Why have you chosen me for your revenge?”
“Hundreds pass by the lake every day and you were the only one who heard my voice. I know..."
“You are looking for some consolation and at least while you are helping me you won't think of
the thing that harms you.“
“I am not helping you because of that, I am helping because if I say yes I can get away from this
pressing feeling sooner. And what is this knife?”
“He killed Yvette with this knife .. A piece of it is still in her body.”
“By the time the ice melts, all the evidence will be lost. If you help, I'll tell you what you have to
look for.”
“Only when...”
As I wanted to say the sentence I woke up in my own bed. My friend was standing next to me and
he was talking into the phone in my room. He had called an ambulance and he had just
said that I had come round.
“I fainted?”
“Do that!”
I was left alone. Fear and dread came over me. Perhaps I I had gone totally insane and begun to
hear voices. I had enough problems as it was. I decided that I would only put up with the matter if I
had the visions again. I asked for a holiday, I couldn't cope with these things happening to me.
a tó felé megyek munkába, hanem kerülővel.
- Mire elolvad a jég minden bizonyíték elvész.
a szobámban lévő telefonon beszélt. A mentőket hívta, éppen most mondta, hogy végre magamhoz
tértem.
- Mi történt? - kérdeztem.
- Elájultam?
- Lemondom az orvost.
- Tedd azt!
I went to bed early and I felt really good when I woke up. I had breakfast and I decided to try to
pose as a normal human being and do everything during the day according to my habits. During the
walk next to the lake, only good feelings came over me. It is nearly impossible to explain how
relaxed I felt. The boss didn't call me, but on my desk there were a lot of papers with which I was
late because of my sickness. I had been working on them for over two hours when there was a knock
on my door. A courier previously unknown to me came with even more material. Because no-one else
was present in the room, I had to sign for them.I hardly could believe my eyes when I opened the
door, because in front of me stood the man whose face I had seen during my nightmarish vision.
“Good morning! I brought some packages that you need to sign for”.
I just stood there gazing in astonishment.
“Good morning! I am just standing here because I don't know if I can take them.”
“Fine! I have been coming here for two weeks now and it is hardly ever possible to handle
things in a way that suits everybody. You are now the only one left working here, right?”
I could hardly sign the list, as the courier immediately dropped the things he had brought
nervously and hurried away without saying goodbye. I just stood there and looked, thinking about
what to do next. If he had been delivering the mail for two weeks, then that's why I was in contact
with him. I tried to concentrate on my work the whole day and I could hardly accomplish what I
wanted. I didn't move from my desk, yet my mates called me in vain to go down with them to have
lunch. If this turned out to be nonsense, they would also leave me in the end.... - they would also
begin to hate me.
Before leaving I wanted to put some things in my drawer and I came across the little plush
animal my former girlfriend gave me. My heart felt lonely and I closed my drawer again swiftly. On
the way home, everything was as calm as before.
I thought that I had surely gone crazy and the fairy at the bottom of the lake was just a
hallucination. I didn't want to eat anything at home and I almost cried myself to sleep, I only wish I
hadn't.
“What is the matter? You have finally faced who you need to.”
The fairy spoke to me for the third time. Now we met in a great hall.
“You don't have to be short-tempered. We have finally moved in the right direction. You should
only think from now on about how to convict Yvette's killer for his deed.”
“A clue is needed, but the body is under water. How come I didn't feel anything today on the
shore?”
“You have already started to walk on the path. Everything depends on luck.”
“Do you remember that your ex-girlfriend always put away her shoes for the spring using
formaldehyde?”
I was awake. The clock set next to my bed showed three o'clock in the morning. An insane
thought rushed through my mind. I looked for the box in which my former girlfriend kept her
personal belongings and I emptied it until I found the vial of formaldehyde. It was so caustic that I
could hardly take a smell. I was so obsessed by the things that were happening that nothing else
could have been in my mind. I put away everything just as fast as I took it out.
After I finished I went into the kitchen and I prepared a glass which I would take with me on the
following day. After getting the glass ready I went back to bed and tried to plan how I could get the
fingerprints. Of course it was possible that the courier would never come back or there would be so
many people in the room that I can't get near him. That is how the night was replaced by the day...
