Lesson 1.2
Grammar: Can / can’t.

Objective: Use ‘can’ to refer to ability in the present.

USE:
1) Use can / can’t to talk about your abilities now.
I can speak English. I can’t speak German.

2) Use can and could to make requests. Could is more polite.

Can you cook this evening please?
Could you pass me the salt?
Use can to reply to requests.
Can I sit here? => Yes, you can. Sorry, you can’t.
Can you cook this evening please? => Yes, I can. Sorry, I can’t.
DON’T use could in replies to requests.
Could you lend me some money?
Yes, I could. => Yes, sure! Sorry, I can’t.
FORM:
1) Can is the same for all persons.

2) The negative form of can is cannot, or can’t.

Common mistakes:
1) Some students make questions incorrectly.
You can speak English? => Can you speak English?
I could sit here? => Could I sit here?

4
Lesson 1.3
Reading: My favorite places.

Objective: Understand simple description of places.

Under four hours from Guayaquil, Crucita is located on Ecuador’s

south coast. It is a charming beach and the perfect destination for
local and foreign people who want to have a peaceful or funny
weekend.
Crucita is a small parish from Portoviejo, Capital of Manabí
Province. It has many tourist attractions which are visited by people
from all over the world. Crucita’s most famous sports to practice are
parasailing and paragliding. Paragliding is a sport in which a
person’s body is attached to a parachute by a harness. He or she has
to jump from a height and glide through the air. Many people go to “La Loma” to practice this
extreme sport or just for watching others doing it. Parasailing is something like paragliding but in
this case, the person glides through the air attached to a parachute while it is being towed by a motor
boat.
Crucita has an exquisite gastronomy. You can find fresh seafood in any restaurant and people are
very friendly.
Santa Ana is part of Manabí’s countryside. It is also a small town but it has wide vegetation and it is
an agricultural zone. There are many crops of corn, plantain,
cocoa, and coffee. On the other hand, many farmers are
engaged in raising chickens, pigs and cows to trade their meat
and other products such as milk, cheese, and eggs. Many
people visit the freshwater spas provided by the river that goes
through the city.
There, you can taste a unique gastronomy in the region.
Women prepare their food in wood-burning ovens which give a
characteristic flavor to their dishes.
During my stay in Ecuador, I visited many places and I made many friends, Esteban and Laura are
two of them. They live in Portoviejo and they study at the University. Portoviejo is not a very
modern city but after the earthquake it suffered in 2016, it has grown considerably. I really would
like to go back.

5
Lesson 2.1
Vocabulary: Free time activities.

Objective: Use idioms related to free time activities.

6
Lesson 2.2
Grammar: Like + (verb + ing).

Objective: Demonstrate the use of like/love/don't like/hate with verb form + ing.

We can use hate, like, love and prefer with an -ing form or with a to-infinitive:

I hate to see food being thrown away.

I love going to the cinema.
I prefer listening to the news on radio than watching it on TV.
He prefers not to wear a tie to work.

In American English, the forms with to-infinitive are much more common than the -ing form.

There is a very small difference in meaning between the two forms. The -ing form emphasizes the
action or experience. The to-infinitive gives more emphasis to the results of the action or event.
We often use the -ing form to suggest enjoyment (or lack of it), and the to-infinitive form to
express habits or preferences.

Compare
I like making jam.
He likes telling jokes.
They don’t like sitting for too long.

emphasis on the experience/action

We have a lot of fruit in the garden. I like to make jam every year.
I prefer to sort out a problem as soon as I can.
If you prefer not to go camping there are youth hostels nearby.

a habit or preference
The -ing form is more common than the to-infinitive form after hate and love:
I hate decorating. I’d rather pay a professional to do it.

7
Lesson 2.3
Reading: I like reading.

Objective: Understand the meaning of new word based on contexts.

8
Lesson 2.
Writing: How do you spend your free time?

Objective: Write short and very simple texts about free time activities.

9
Lesson 3.1
Vocabulary: Types of films.

Objective: Identify vocabulary related to films.

10
Lesson 3.2
Grammar: Object pronouns.

Objective: Use personal pronouns as objects and complements.

An object pronoun is a type of personal pronoun that is normally used as a grammatical object,
either as the direct or indirect object of a verb, or as the object of a preposition. These pronouns
always take the objective case, whether they are indirect object pronouns or direct object
pronouns.
The seven basic pronouns take on different forms when used as object pronouns rather than as
subject pronouns:
I become Me
You become You (this rule applies for singular and plural use)
He becomes Him
She becomes Her
It becomes It
We become Us
They become Them
Object Pronoun Examples
In the following examples, the subject is in bold, the verb is in italics, and the object pronoun is in
bold and is underlined.
Bob took her to work Monday.
Will you please tell them to come in?
He told you a lie about where he was Saturday.
Our grandparents gave us candy and our teeth are just fine.

11
Lesson 3.3
Reading: Films.

Objective: Recognize the meaning of new word based on contexts.

12
Lesson 3.4
Writing: A film review.

Objective: Write short and very simple film review.

13
Lesson 4.1
Vocabulary: Music genres.

Objective: Distinguish some music genres.

14
Lesson 4.2
Grammar: Possessive pronouns.

Objective: Apply the possessive pronouns in short sentences.

Possessive Pronouns

We use possessive pronouns to refer to a specific person/people or thing/things (the

"antecedent") belonging to a person/people (and sometimes belonging to an animal/animals or
thing/things).

We use possessive pronouns depending on:

• number: singular (e.g: mine) or plural (e.g: ours)

• person: 1st person (eg: mine), 2nd person (e.g: yours) or 3rd person (e.g: his)
• gender: male (his), female (hers)

Below are the possessive pronouns, followed by some example sentences. Notice that each
possessive pronoun can:

• be subject or object
• refer to a singular or plural antecedent

number person gender (of "owner") possessive pronouns

singular 1st male/ female mine

2nd male/ female yours

3rd male his

female hers

15
number person gender (of "owner") possessive pronouns

plural 1st male/ female ours

2nd male/ female yours

3rd male/ female/ neuter theirs

• Look at these pictures. Mine is the big one. (subject = My picture)

• I like your flowers. Do you like mine? (object = my flowers)

• I looked everywhere for your key. I found John's key but I couldn't find yours. (object =
your key)
• My flowers are dying. Yours are lovely. (subject = Your flowers)

• All the essays were good but his was the best. (subject = his essay)
• John found his passport but Mary couldn't find hers. (object = her passport)
• John found his clothes but Mary couldn't find hers. (object = her clothes)

• Here is your car. Ours is over there, where we left it. (subject = Our car)
• Your photos are good. Ours are terrible. (subject = Our photos)

• Each couple's books are colour-coded. Yours are red. (subject = Your books)
• I don't like this family's garden but I like yours. (object = your garden)

• These aren't John and Mary's children. Theirs have black hair. (subject = Their children)
• John and Mary don't like your car. Do you like theirs? (object = their car)
Notice that the following (with apostrophe [']) do NOT exist: her's, your's, their's

Notice that the interrogative pronoun whose can also be a possessive pronoun (an interrogative
possessive pronoun). Look at these examples:

• There was $100 on the table and Tara wondered whose it was.
• This car hasn't moved for two months. Whose is it?

16
Lesson 4.3
