IV. PROCEDURES

A. Introduction Adding and subtracting decimal numbers are tasks that show you
how to read, write, compare and arrange decimals. After going
through this lesson you are expected to solve routine or non-routine
problems involving addition and subtraction of decimal numbers
including money.

Identify/ determine to which mathematical operations the following

terms belong.
 Addends
 Minuend
 Subtrahend
 Sum
 Difference

Write every digit of the given number in the problem according to

the decimal places they belong. Afterwards, arrange this decimal

number in ascending order.

“Three teachers of Sunny Brooke Elementary School decided to

join the longest motorcycle driving competition in the city of
General Trias. Sir Jobert travelled 13.4867 kilometers using his
blue motorcycle, sir Emann travelled 13.4678 kilometers using
yellow motorcycle, and sir Renz travelled 13.4768 kilometers using
his red motorcycle. Who travelled farthest among the three?
Arrange the decimal numbers in ascending order to determine the
answer in the problem.”

c. ₱100.00 x ₱78.75 =N
d. ₱100.00 ÷ ₱78.75 =N
Objective 7: Selected, developed, organized and used appropriate teaching
and learning resources including ICT, to address learning goals.

B. Development Present the lesson by showing pictures and ask the following
questions:
 What does the picture is all about?
 How is gasoline produced?
 What are the different uses of gasoline?
 What can you say about the price of the gasoline nowadays?
 What do you think are the ways to save gasoline?

Let the pupils read the given problem and visualize afterwards on
how it will be solve or answer.

“Sir Pablo, teacher of Sunny Brooke Elementary School drives his

car every time he goes to school. Last Monday, he consumed five
tenths liters of gasoline while going to the school. Traffic was
heavy on his way back home. He consumed seventy-five hundredths
liters of gasoline.
a. How many liters of gasoline did he consume in all?
b. What is the difference of gasoline consumed by Sir Pablo
going to and from the school?

Ask the pupils on the following question:

 What are being asked in the problem?
 What are the given facts? Write it in standard form.
Give emphasis on the decimal places of the given numbers by
asking the following question:
 Are the given numbers expressed on the same decimal
places?
 What are we going to do to make our given decimal
numbers be on the same decimal places?
 Does the value of the given decimal number change after
it has been renamed?
 How are we going to solve the first problem? What operation
will we used?

Illustrate the given decimal numbers using the grid. Let the pupils to
shade the grid on the computer to represent the decimal numbers.
Solve the first problem using an illustration.

First Problem

To solve the second problem, identify the subtrahend and the

minuend and write them vertically.
What should be observed in writing the subtraction equation
vertically especially if their decimal places are not the same?

0.75 MINUEND 0.75

- 0.5 SUBTRAHEND 0.50
------------------ ---------------
DIFFERENCE 0.25

To understand further the addition and subtraction process involving

decimals, let the pupils watch a video clip presentation.
Objective 1: Applied Knowledge of content within and across teaching
areas.
Objective 7: Selected, developed, organized and used appropriate teaching
and learning resources including ICT, to address learning goals.

C. Engagement To deepen your understanding on solving routine or non-routine

problems involving addition and subtraction of decimal numbers
including money, read and solve the following problem.

Learning Task 2:
Answer the following problem using the Polya’s 4-step in solving
word problems.

1. Jobert donated 3.25 kilos of chicken, 1.75 kilos of beef and

2.50 kilos of pork to family evacuees that are heavily affected
by volcanic eruption. How many kilos of meat did Jobert
donated in all?”

2. Due to continuous treat on health brought about by covid-19,

mother bought a box of face mask for ₱78.75. She also
