Reproduction is the process by which organisms give rise to offspring. It is one of the defining
characteristics of living things. There are two basic types of reproduction: asexual reproduction and
sexual reproduction.
Asexual reproduction involves a single parent. It results in offspring that are genetically identical
to each other and to the parent. Some microorganisms reproduce this way.
Sexual reproduction involves two parents. Parents produce reproductive cells called gametes that
unite to form an offspring which are not identical with the parent.
Kinds of Asexual Reproduction
Vegetative reproduction is a kind of asexual reproduction in plants where a new individual,
known as offspring, is produced from a single parent.
Fission. The cell divides to form two identical daughter cells. Each daughter cell continues to
grow until it becomes as large as the parent cell.
Budding occurs when a parent cell forms a bubble-like bud. The bud stays attached to the
1 parent cell while it grows and develops. When the bud is fully developed, it breaks away from the
parent cell and forms a new organism. The outgrowth separates from the parent and becomes a
new individual.
Spore formation is also a type of asexual reproduction which is common among molds and
fungi.
Regeneration and Fragmentation- occurs when a parent organism breaks into fragments, or
pieces, and each fragment develops into anew organism.
Kinds of Sexual Reproduction
Fertilization- the union of two haploid gametes, the spermatozoa (sperm) and the oocyte
(egg), to
form a zygote and commence a series of mitotic divisions that results in cell differentiation and
embryo development.
Conjugation- usually happens to microorganisms. This is usually exhibited by Spirogyra, a
green alga which is found in freshwater habitat such as ponds and rivers. During conjugation, a
bridge forms, emptying the other cell. The contents of both cells combine in the other cell to form
a zygote. This zygote can secrete a substance that forms a wall around itself for protection against
unfavorable conditions like drying up of the pond that they are in. When conditions become
suitable for growth and development, the zygote grows into a new individual.
Pollination- is the transfer of pollen from an anther (male part) of a plant to the stigma
(female
part) of a plant.

___________4. Reproducing plants through their stems, leaves and roots are collectively called vegetative
propagation.
___________5. In fission, the parent cell will pinch apart to form three daughter cells.
___________6. The stigma, style and the ovary are the female reproductive parts of the flower which is
called
pistil.
___________7. The anther and the filament are the male reproductive parts of the flower called stamen.
___________8. In plants, pollination takes place after fertilization.
___________9. Sexual reproduction gives rise to offspring that are a combination of the traits from its
parents.
___________10 Spore formation is a type of asexual reproduction which is common among molds and
fungi.

Performance Tasks Instructions. Sexual Reproduction in plants initially occurs in the flowers.
