Worksheet 1
Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering
Name: Eleazar Garcia Robles date: 11/08/22
Please answer:
7. Metals have the following characteristics: High melting points, good conductors of
heat and electricity, high density.
9. Ceramics have the following characteristics: High melting points, great strength,
considerable durability, low electrical and thermal conductivity.
a) Molding
b) Electrolysis
c) Cutting
others: Rolling, Forging, Heat-treating.
12. Prepare a table with the following properties (or attributes): density, melting temperature,
mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and prices for the following
substances or materials: water, aluminum, gold, iron, tungsten, polyethylene and wood. Indicate
the units of thermal and electrical conductivity in corresponding columns.
13. Very briefly (one paragraph of 5-7 lines) describe (using your own words, NO COPY-
PASTE, PLEASE, NEVER), the manufacturing process of the following products:
a) steel sheets: First the steel ingots have to be pre-heat for an easy
deformation of the ingot by a stretching process, then a line of big cylinders
are going to press the steel ingots until get right measures. After that the
Sheet metal is going to be cut in various ways with a laser to get de desired
shape.
b) spaghetti: Fist of all the pasta is prepared with flour and water, the dough
is rolled out to the desired thickness and then cut with a knife, after that
the spaghetti has to be hung to dry before being cooked. For cook the
spaghettis you have to boil water with salt, after that you have to put the
spaghettis inside de boil water until they get soft, once cooking is finish,
the spaghetti has to be removed with a strainer.
c) glass bottles: The glass bottles are made by sand of silicie and limestone
that mix goes to an oven and it gets hot to 1550 C to create molten glass,
when the mix of molten glass gets out of the oven goes to a refiner to get
cool, after that when de molten glass gets cool goes to other place for
being cut with scissor, each drop will become a glass bottle, then these
drops fall into a molding machine where they finally receive their shape.
15: Determine, experimentally, the weight of a common glass bottle (empty) (see figure),
then calculate the weight if the bottle (with exactly the same shape and dimensions) were
made of PET:
Weight of glass bottle: 325g
Calculations to obtain the weight of the PET bottle (please watch your use of
units): Volume of the bottle
16.- Using Power Point (or any other appropriate software), prepare a drawing of the Materials Science
Tetrahedron, paste your drawing below (You are not expected to dedicate a lot of time to this,
this should take your around 10-15 minutes).
