Performance Task

A. Write what is being asked (converse, inverse, contrapositive) on the following conditional statements.

1.) If Superman is the man of steel, then Batman is the Dark Knight.
(Contrapositive) - If Batman is not the Man of Steel, then Superman is not
the Dark Knight.
2.) If a polygon has six sides, then it is a hexagon. (Inverse)
- If a polygon does not have six sides, then it is not a hexagon.
3.) If an animal has hair, then it is a mammal. (Converse) - If it is a mammal,
then it is an animal with hair.
4.) If a student has his driver’s license, then he is at least 16 years old. (Converse)
- If the student is at least 16 years old, then he has his driver’s license.
5.) If you smoke cigarettes, your breath will stink. (Contrapositive)
- If your breath does not stink, then you do not smoke cigarettes.

B. Translate the following statements into symbols and vice versa.

D. i. Express the following as natural English sentences:


Let P = Jenna will pass the exam, Q = Jenna will get her license and R = Jenna will become successful.
1.) ~R ↔ ~Q
- Jenna will not become successful if and only if she will not get her license.
2.) (~P ^ Q) → R
- It is the case if Jenna does not pass the exam and will get her license, then
she will become successful.
3.) ~(Q v ~R)
-It is not the case if Jenna will get her license or she will not become successful.

D. ii. Express the following as natural English sentences:


Let S = Zoe loves mathematics, T = Xavy hates history and U = Keziah failed both the
subjects. 1.) U → ~S ^ T
-If Keziah failed both the subjects, then Zoe does not love mathematics and Xavy hates history.
2.) ~(U v S) ↔ S
- It is not the case that Keziah failed both subjects or Zoe loves mathematics if and only if Zoe
loves mathematics.
3.) T → (S ^ U v T)
- If Xavy hates history, then it is the case that Zoe loves mathematics and Keziah failed both
subjects or Xavy hates history.

D. iii. Convert the following statements into symbols. Use the letters given above.
