Calculating Kick Tolerance (While Drilling)

Assuming Influx Gradient (Igr) = 0.1 Psi/ft (aprox for gas)

K Intensity (Ki) = SIDP/(.052 X Tvd)= Increment in Mud weight to kill = ………..(Ppg/Pcf)

MAASP = ……………….(Psi) SIDP = ……………..Psi Mgr = ………… …Psi/Ft FracPshoe = ……………………Psi

1. Calculate the Max Tolerable kick height of the kick (Until it reaches Csg Shoe) = K HtMax (Ft)

(MAASP – SIDP)
K HtMax(Ft) =
(Mgr – Igr)

2. There are two scenarios when kick can have Max ht (tolerable) : Until it reaches shoe

a. When kick is at bottom and SICP = MAASP

b. When kick is @ Csg shoe, Gas Pr = Frac Pr @ shoe (FracPshoe)

a. Volume of kick @ bottom ( KT1 ) resulting in K HtMax

KT1 (Bbls) = K HtMax X Cap (OH-BHA)

b. Kick vol @ bottom which wiil expand to VS @ shoe

with Gas Pr = Frac Pr @ shoe(FracPshoe)
VS = K HtMax X Cap(OH - DP)
P1V1=P2V2 KT2 X Formation Pressure = Vs X FPshoe

KT2 (Bbls) = K HtMax X Cap (OH - DP) X FracPshoe

Formation Pressure

Lower Value of the above two ( KT1 & KT2) is the Kick Tolerance…In bbls on
