II. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING  Analyzes the negative health impact of drinking alcohol, describe the
COMPETENCIES (MELCs) harmful short and long-term effects of drinking alcohol, interprets blood
alcohol concentration (BAC) in terms of physiological changes in the
body and the impact of drinking alcohol on the family, and community.
 Discusses strategies in the prevention and control of cigarette smoking
and drinking alcohol beverages, apply resistance skills in situations related
to cigarette and alcohol use, follow policies and laws in the family, school,
and community.
 Suggests healthy alternatives to cigarette and alcohol to promote healthy
lifestyle (self, family, community)

I. Introduction (Time Frame: DAY 1)
Alcohol is a colorless, bitter-tasting substance that humans have been consuming since the ancient times  comes from plants
that underwent fermentation is the process of extracting alcohol from a plant or a fruit Example: beer and wine. A beer is
extracted from grains. Wines are from grapes and other fruits.

TYPES OF ALCOHOL

1. Isopropyl 2. Methanol 3. Ethanol. Isopropyl and Methanol are used in laboratories and are poisonous and fatal if taken is also
called beverage alcohol which comes from fruits and grains – When humans consume ethanol alcohol in unregulated amount,
it may result to intoxication and alteration of the nervous system. Alcohol slows down the body systems, so it is a DEPRESSANT- a
drug that suppresses the central nervous system, slows down body function Stimulant, a drug which temporarily quickens the
central nervous system.

EFFECTS OF ALCHOL DRINKING

irritates the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach, makes the heart work harder, makes the body lose heat, causes the liver
to work harder , loss of balance and coordination , impaired speech, hearing, and vision , lightheaded and very elated feeling ,
intoxication, hangover, nausea causes dehydration.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS
There are many physical effects of alcoholism. You are probably aware of the effects that occur when a person has
been drinking a lot. Their speech maybe slurred, their gait maybe crooked, they may become disoriented or confused. Their
reaction time slows, and they become uncoordinated.
MENTAL EFFECTS
Alcohol can have a very temporary positive impact on our mood in long term it can cause big problems for our mental health.

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL
 Drowsiness

 Diarrhea

LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL

 Permanent damage to the brain


 Vitamin B1 deficiency, which can lead to a disorder characterized by amnesia, apathy and disorientation
 Ulcers
 Gastritis (inflammation of stomach walls)
 Malnutrition
 Cancer of the mouth and throat
 Increased on-the-job injuries and loss of productivity
 Increased family problems, broken relationships

BLOOD-ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION

(BAC) is the amount of alcohol that has entered a person’s bloodstream at certain duration also called blood alcohol level
(BAL) BLOOD-ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION is measured in percentages for instance: Having a BAC of 0.05% means there is 5
parts of alcohol per 10,000 parts of blood in the body. 0.3 – 0.5% BAC could lead to coma, brain damages, and death.

Steps to avoid temptations in drinking alcohol.


Step 1 Just say NO.
Step 2 Say No again and again.
Step 3 Suggest another activity.
Step 4 Give a reason
Step 5 Walk away.
