Design Philosophy : RCC Box Type Structure

1.0 Description of the Structure:

The RCC Box Structure is modelled as a Plane Frme in STAAD Pro Software and the analysis has been done accordingly.

2.0 Design Standards:

The design of various components of the bridge, in general is based on the IRC codal provisions. The following IRC codes has been used in the
design of Structure:

IRC: 5-2015 Standard Specificaitons and Code of Practice for Road Bridges ; Section I : General Features of Design
IRC: 6-2014 Standard Specificaitons and Code of Practice for Road Bridges ; Section II : Loads and Stresses
IRC: 112-2011 Code of Practive for Concrete Road Bridges

3.0 Loadings:

3.1 Dead Load & SuperImposed Dead Load:

Dead Loads are calculated based on the unit weights given in the IRC: 6-2014

3.2 Carriageway Live Load:

The effect of Live Loads are considered as per the procedure given in the Annexure B-3 of IRC: 112 in Tranverse direction.

3.3 Earth Pressure:

Earth Pressure at rest with coefficient of 0.5 is considered in the design of Structure.

3.4 Live Load Surcharge:

The Box structure has been designed for 1.2m height of Live Load Surchage as per IRC: 6.

3.5 Load due to Temperature Variation:

Uniform temperature as well as Temperature Gradient has been considered as per provisions of IRC:6.

3.6 Load Combinations:

Load Combinations are considered as per the Tables given in Annex B of IRC:6 for various Limit State Design.

3.6.1 Ultimate Limit State (ULS) :

Capacity of Section in Bending Moment and Shear Forcec is checked in ULS Case.

3.6.2 Serviceability Limit State (SLS) :

The stress check will done in SLS-Rare Combination and Stress Checck & Crack Width will be checked in SLS-QPC Combination.

4.0 Structural Analysis:

The analysis of RCC Box Structure has been modelled as 2D structure in STAAD Pro. The Dead Loads and SIDL loads are applied as mentioned
above. The effect of Live Load is considered as per the procedure given in Annexure B-3 of IRC:112 bymeans of Effective Width Method and
applied as Point Loads on the Structure. As the Box base is resting fully on the soil, the base support condiiton was simulated by providing discrete
Spring Constatns in the Base Slab. Soil Spring Constants has been calculated based on the SBC of Soil and Allowable Settlement.
