AS/SW 2 - STRESS

A. Axial/Normal/Simple Stress

Determine the average normal stress in rod AB if the load has a

mass of M ≔ 50 kg . The diameter of rod AB is dAB ≔ 8 mm .

B. Shear Stress

Determine the largest internal shear force resisted by the bolt.

Ÿ Only the forces on the green plates exert shear force
to the bolt.
Ÿ Consider the plate carrying the 10kN force.
Ÿ The reactions in the bolt in both its section are 5kN.
Ÿ For that with 8kN, the reactions are 4kN
Ÿ Thus, the highest shear force is 5kN.

C. Bearing Stress

The allowable bearing stress for each material under the

supports A and B in the figure is σbr ≔ 500 psi &
P ≔ 2000 lbf .

A thin-walled hallow sphere 3.5m in diameter holds gas at 1700kPa. Determine the minimum wall
thickness of the sphere if its allowable stress is 60MPa.

A vertical cylindrical tank is 2 meters in diameter and 3 meters high. Its sides are held in position by
means of two steel hoops, one at the top and the other at the bottom. If the tank is filled with water to
depth of 2.1m, determine the tensile force in the top hoop.
