Goal: to improve safety and educational opportunities for children and communities in
Sagrada Familia Elementary School, through implementation of safe pathway and
beautification of school facilities.

Comment: This project meets clear needs in this school. Funds for purchasing construction
materials, paints and materials used for reapir and pavement of school pathways this will
benefits the safety for teachers and students, will result in long-term ability to take advantage
of educational opportunities.

Background information
A well-maintained school provides a safe and attractive learning environment for pupils.
School beautification project however, can offer much more than physical improvements to the school
buildings and grounds. Through repair and repainting the outside and inside of the school and
pavement of the school pathway pupils can take advantage of education, personal development and
community building opportunities.

The Sagrada Familia Elementary School projects contributes to achieve Environment Friendly
School focusing mainly with its purpose to promote the safe and conducive for learning in partneship
with the Local Goverment Unit and other stakeholders.

Overall the PROBLEMS can be summarized as follows:

 repair of Kindergarten classroom;

 pavement of school pathway;
 repainting of classroom wall (outside and inside)
 Embankment of school ground

Under these conditions, schools become unsafe places for school children. If the
project will be realized, many generations of learners will benefit from it, particularly, the school
ground which is also being used as a venue for the different school activities such as PE festival,
scouting, celebration of foundation day, family day, graduation/recognition day and others. While the
second project is for effective and conducive learning and the third project for the beautification of
school facilities.

Project time frame:-5-10 months

Target area: Repair, Pavement of school pathway, Repainting of classroom wall and
Embankment of school ground

Target groups: 
 143 school children and 143 parents in the target area;
 1 non-teaching school personnel and 7 teachers;
 Parent and Teachers Associations with the aim of outreach to the communities;
 Kinder pupils

Programme strategies:

 The development of life-skills in school children;

 Safe school environment;
 Outreach to families and communities.

Methods of implementation

Life-Skills Development: 
1. The school staff, parents and pupils will learn how to take care of the environment and the
school that serves as thier second home. Providing a condusive learning environment will
encourage and motivates pupils to learn more.  

2. Teachers and children in the target areas will be trained in life-skills education focusing on,
at least, the following themes:

 Physical activities
 Love for the environment
 Environmental conservation (including recycling and drought preparedness).

 In addition several activities, such as sports day where children are free to explore the safe
and condusive environment.

A Healthy, Safe and Condusive School Environment 

For the school, a joint assessment on the safetiness will be made with the school
DRRM leader, the school head and teachers, as well as, with the school children,and
representatives of the Parents and Teachers Associations. 

On the basis of the budget available, a draft plan for renovation and a ‘maintenance
and operation plan’ will be developed and agreed upon in writing by all parties involved. 
The programme provides installation materials.

Once the project has been implemented the school facilities will at least consist of:

 Kindergarten Classroom
 School pathway
 Safe school grounds

Outreach to Families and Communities 

In all stages of the implementation of the programme, parents and teachers

associations will be involved. To strengthen the advocacy of the safe and condusive learning
environement highlighting a child-friendly school we will continue the beautification of the
school and invite more stakeholders to realize this project.

Monitoring and Evaluation 

For the day-to-day implementation of the programme at school level, ‘implementation and
monitoring committees’ will be established. These committees consist of the following
members:

 School Head
 Teachers
 Community Representatives
 Parents
 School DRRM Leader

In addition to giving follow-up to the education and construction activities, the

committee will keep a record on the health statistics/absentees in the school if the
beautification of the school will help to increase enrolless and encourage learners to study
well. This will allow them to monitor the health impact of the programme, as well as, will
quickly show the need for corrective measures, if considered necessary. Frequency of
meetings: Quarterly.

Management, implementation and sustainability

The implementation of the programme will be coordinated by local LGUs under the
supervision of Municipal Enginer Officer. The repair, pavement, repainting and
embankement of school ground in school will take a total of 5-10 months. The educational
activities are an ongoing process simultaneously to the construction phase. The programme
will support the educational part, for a period of 1 year, after which it should be self-
sustained. Once the programme has been implemented, the "implementation and monitoring
committees" in the school will be transformed into "monitoring committees".
