OBJECTIVES

 Explain what the Operative System is.

 Describe what the Operative System does.
 Name examples of Operative Systems.

3
INTRODUCTION

An operating system is a software which performs all

the basic tasks like file management, memory
management, process management, handling input and
output, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk
drives and printers.

4
What is an operating
system?
An operating system is the most important software that
runs on a computer. It manages the computer's memory and
processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. It also
allows you to communicate with the computer without
knowing how to speak the computer's language. Without an
operating system, a computer is useless.

 Modern operating systems use a graphical user

interface, or GUI. A GUI lets you use your mouse to
click icons, buttons, and menus, and everything is
clearly displayed on the screen using a combination of
graphics and text.

Some of the most common operating systems are:

 Microsoft Windows
 macOS
 Linux

5
 Microsoft Windows (also referred to as Windows or
Win) is a graphical operating system developed and
published by Microsoft. It provides a way to store
files, run software, play games, watch videos, and
connect to the Internet.
 MacOS is the computer operating system (OS) for
Apple desktops and laptops. It is a proprietary
graphical OS that powers every Mac.
OSes interact with a computer's hardware, allocating
the resources necessary to complete tasks given to it -
- for example, running an application. OSes allocate
resources including memory, processing power and
file storage.
 Linux is a free, open source operating system,
released under the GNU General Public License
(GPL). Anyone can run, study, modify, and
redistribute the source code, or even sell copies of
their modified code, as long as they do so under the
same license.

6
Mobile Operating systems

MP3 players are different from desktop Mobile

devices such as phones, tablet computers, and and
laptop computers, so they run operating systems that
are designed specifically for mobile devices.

Examples of mobile operating systems:

 Apple iOS
 Google Android

Apple iOS is a mobile operating system created and

developed by Apple Inc. exclusively for its hardware. It is
the operating system that powers many of the company's
mobile devices, including the iPhone and iPad touch.

Google Android is a mobile operating system based on a

modified version of the Linux kernel and other open
source software, designed primarily for touchscreen
mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

7
Conclusion

An operating system is a software programme

required to manage and operate a computing device
like smartphones, tablets, computers, supercomputers,
web servers, cars, network towers, smartwatches, etc.
The operating system (OS) manages all of the software
and hardware on the computer, and other devices.
Some examples of operative systems are Linux,
MacOS, Microsoft Word, Apple IOS, and Google
Android.
