Research Report: The negative

impacts of cellphone addiction on
academic performances of ENSAM
Engineering students

Realized by: JAJA Abdelkarim Asked by: Mrs. Sadoki

University year: 2021/2022

Abstract

This study investigated the negative impacts of smartphone addiction on the academic
performance of engineering students at ENSAM RABAT. To determine these impacts, this
study deployed the quantitive approach to collect data from 70 engineering students
using a questionnaire.
It was found that most engineering students are more hooked to their phones which will
lead to negative effects like procrastination, submitting their assignments at the last
minute of the deadline, and so.
It was also found that using smartphones distracts engineering students from their
studies in certain aspects.
The results also showed the negative impacts of using smartphones on engineering
students’ academic capabilities and progression.

Keywords: Smartphone, procrastination, engineering students, academic performance,

Introduction
From the inception of the phone era, most people were astonished by the new invention
and wonder how does it work? what are the benefits bring to humanity and lots of worry
questions about the new guest to our life? Time goes by, and the capabilities of phones
don’t tie to the make calls and connect the west to east of the earth, but the advancement
of technologies make it more powerful and adapt it with the new daily needs of the
people. They can send pictures and share them from all over the world instantly.

With the fast advancements of technology, phones become smarter and facilitate the
daily activities of most people from housekeepers to students, workers to managers, and
so. Our irrational use of these tools has led us to get hooked to them. We become more
addicted to our phones. The studies confirmed that overuse of these electronic devices
creates a new type of addiction that is not tracked like other ones. They talked here
about behavioral addiction. Most people delay or procrastinate their important tasks in
workplaces or schools because they spend much more time in front of their phones.

The engineering students do not exclude from that list of procrastination. This research
report aims to provide a social study about the negative effect of smartphone addiction
on the academic performance of ENSAM engineering. Based on the quantitive methods
like questionnaires and interviews we will discover the main causes of these impacts
and others facts about the misuse and overuse of their phones.

Methods and Materials
Data were collected by quantitive method via a questionnaire created from Google Form.
The participants completed the questionnaire by clicking on the shared link on the
Google platform. The link was shared in the school Facebook and Whatsapp groups to
reach as much possible of engineering students. Luckily, the questionnaire was
submitted to more than 70 engineering students from the social media platform. The
participants were male(more than 50%) and female(more than 40%) and ranged in age
from 20 to 24 years old. The finding of this study was part of an investigation of the
impacts of smartphones on the academic performance of Engineering students at
ENSAM, which included a standardized scholastic questionnaire.

The questionnaire took less than 5 minutes to complete separately by each single
participant.

The technique of questionnaire gathers more data from social media like Facebook and
Whatsapp quickly and in a short time. One of the main reasons for choosing it was the
nature of the study chosen requires a quantitive method like the survey or interview.
Due to the health crisis, making an interview in place was impossible so we decided to
go through with the survey.

There were several limitations throughout this study like the diffusion of information in
all social media platforms and the filling of form take much time to gather enough data to
start your interpretations.

Below you will find the main questions posed in the survey. Some of them are direct
questions whilst others are indirect or open questions.
● Gender
● What's your academic level?
● How many hours per day do you spend with your smartphone?
● Do you see yourself addicted to smartphones?
● When did you own your first smartphone?
● When did you own your first smartphone?
● What're the main activities do you use your smartphone for?
● Do you think your smartphone is a source of procrastination of your academic
duties?
● How to measure your academic performance with the use of a smartphone?
● Do you use your smartphone while attending your classes courses?
● What are other impacts on your academic performances caused by your
smartphone?

These results showed more negative effects of the overuse and misuse of smartphones
during the engineering degree among students. Most of the impacts of smartphone
addiction were negative as expected.

Discussion
Based on the previous studies that have been done in the same subject. most of their
results show the negative impacts of smartphone addiction on the academic
performance of engineering students. This study didn’t exclude from the crowd of recent
studies.
Indeed, it came to emphasize the problems relate the smartphone addiction. The results
are legible to the goals and expectations established before starting the study.

The study mentioned also some positive consequences of smartphones in the academic
field, especially the engineering one. They could help the students to access the
information easily and quickly in one click, get informed with the latest milestones about
their fields. They’ve updated with the new technologies and inventions related to their
interests and hobbies as well.

10
Conclusion
This study found how deep smartphone addiction impacts the academic performance of
engineering students at ENSAM school. The misuse and overuse of those devices by the
students have a lot of negative consequences on their mental and attitude health.

Based on the findings of this study, we could recommend the rational use of
smartphones particularly, and electronic devices generally. We’ve advised taking digital
breaks from time to time for example adapting digital detox for those students. That will
enhance their concertation and give positive impacts in terms of academic grades and
performance.
