TREND

It is a conceptualized idea that has the prospect of providing or having a

continuing influence for a longer period of time due to its increasing and

sustained presence and effect or even demand among its consumers in the case

of a product.

ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP A TREND

According to Henrik Vejlgaard, the author of Anatomy of a Trend: “There is

nothing mysterious about it and it never just happens out of the blue; though it

may sometimes appear to be so. That it is a social process means it’s created by

human beings.

A trend becomes a trend through a constant cycle of innovation and

emulation. It’s the way people embrace one another and interact with one

another. People are obsessed with trends because joining a trend means your

part of a group; you are in, you belong

ELEMENTS OF TREND

a. DURATION OF TIME

The lifespan of products or ideas that become trends do not disappear

quickly. Trends have long staying power and enjoy a long period of

popularity.

b. ACCEPTABILITY

Trends are popularly accepted by many industries and people.

c. CULTURAL BASIS

A trend is rooted on the people's cultural traditions, beliefs, and values. A

trend persists and continues because people have seen it as part of a

society's culture.

d. TRANSITORY INCREASE OR DECREASE

A trend shows a transitory increase or decrease of a particular idea, event

or phenomenon.

e. DRIVER,ENABLER AND BLOCKER

Agents in trend

CHARACTERISTICS OF TRENDS

What is a characteristic?

It is a special quality or trait that makes a person, thing, or group different

from others. Its shows special qualities or traits of a person, thing or group.

a. INNOVATION

A trend should introduce changes and something absolutely new to a

community. It is the cat or process of introducing something new like ideas,

devices, or methods.

b. CONSISTENCY

One thing after the other, people can still recognize that this style or trend or

culture or language is a trademark or a mark of a country or a place. Identity

has become a part of it.

c. VERSATILITY

trend always appreciated by people despite the difference in culture, place and

race. It is the quality or a state of being versatile (able to do many things).

CAUSES OF THE EMERGENCE OF TRENDS

Trends reflect the changes in society. The introduction of a new practice or way

of living becomes possible because of the shifts in existing patterns. Various

factors alter the status quo, leading to the emergence of a new order.

Causal mechanism

refers to an object, or condition that leads to the emergence of aphenomenon. In

trends, it is the factor that leads to its emergence. However, it should benoted

that the existence of a social phenomenon is rarely attributed to a single

variable. Thus, it is more appropriate to search for a set of conditions that

produces a trend.

Technological Innovations

The introduction of new technology changes people’s way of life (Griffiths and

Keirns 2017).Existing practices are modified or abandoned as a result of

technological innovation. The invention of the email, for example, diminished the

need for ordinary postal services. Within the postal industry itself, innovations in

transportation technologies decreased the length of time required for a parcel to

be delivered from one place to another. These two examples illustrate the

emergence of new trends (i.e., use of email) and the decline of an existing one

(i.e., use of postal services). Take note that the decline does necessarily mean

elimination, as the example of postal services proves. Old practices may continue

to be relevant but to a lesser degree.

Institutional Changes

Changes in the patterns embedded in social institutions also drive the

emergence of trends. It is also possible that new patterns eventually become

trends in themselves. Since society is a system, the change in an institution

inevitably affects the other parts. Take education as an example. The shift to

distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic altered existing patterns in the

educational system. Distance learning, in itself, became the trend in the delivery

of instruction. In its technological aspects, the shift resulted in the adoption or

the greater utilization of learning management systems (LMS). It also led to the

increased involvement of parents in the education of their children.

Demographic Changes

The shifts in characteristics of a population also lead to the emergence of a

trend. Examples of demographic indicators include birth, death, migration, and

fertility rates. Trends are driven by the rise or fall of these factors, which are

also considered as trends in their own right. To illustrate, think of how

population growth affects the priorities of the government. This trend has a

domino effect on government spending on social services.

Ideational Changes

It is important to consider that ideas also cause social change (Macionis 2012).

The way people think influences their actions. Ideational changes also refer to

the shifts in the prevailing paradigms in society. Take the discourse on mental

health as an example. The advancements in psychology and neuroscience

introduced new ways of thinking about mental health, which is translated into

the formulation of approaches and methods sensitive to people’s needs. At the

institutional level, recognizing the importance of mental health informed the

creation of laws and policies at the national and local levels.

Environmental Changes

The social world is not separate from the natural world. This means that natural

events influence social patterns. The reverse is also true: Humans cannot escape

the fact that thei ractions affect the environment's living and nonliving

components. The rise in global temperature, for example, alters agriculture

practices, which also leads to changes inpatterns in food consumption.

CONSEQUENCES OF THE EMERGENCE OF TRENDS

The discussion on the causal mechanisms provided a glimpse of the possible

impacts of trends. As explained in the previous study, changes are observable in

different aspects of social life. The sections below discuss the levels of analysis in

sociological research that may be used as a framework to trace the

consequences of trends (Macionis2012).

LEVEL OF ANALYSIS

Macro Level

refer to major shifts in consumer behaviour that will direct the business

landscape in the long term. They have a cross-industry impact and evolve over

time. Examples of previous global macro trends include the adoption of social

media or catering to the ageing population.

Meso Level

The analysis designed specifically to reveal connections between micro-and

macro-level.Specifically, the level is useful in identifying the impacts of a trend

on institutions like the family, education, religion, economy, and politics. The

same may also be done to organizations such as businesses, trade unions, and

civil society organizations.

Micro Level

The analysis begins with an individual, snowballing as social relationships are

traced or may begin with a small group of individuals in a particular social

context. At the micro level, meanings are extracted to discover how people

construct their realities.
