Personal goal:
If you want to be that student who exceeds expectations, as described in
the ATL self-management table above, what strategies could you use to
manage time and tasks effectively? How are you going to organise this
task and enhance the learning opportunities?
I would like to really learn how to do all the important techniques in
basketball. This means that I will really have to pay attention to my peers
and when doing my own research, I learn something from it. I would like
to really use all the time available to make the most out of the things that
I can do.
Which skill would you like to improve during this unit as a basketball
player? Be specific and realistic!
I would really like to improve my sets shot as that is the one that I am
coaching and used very often in basketball. I would also like to be very
good at dribbling and passing as my whole teams depends on each one of
the team members so we must cooperate with the correct skills.

5
Criterion A: research about basketball

Write in your own words; minimum of 300 words!

Write down your sources in MLA!

1) Out of all basketball rules, which 3 rules do you find most important to
use at a secondary school playing basketball and explain why you
choose these rules!

2) Find 4 pictures of the following techniques (and add your sources!):

- Dribbling
- 4 ways of passing
- Lay-up
- Set-shot

3) Describe the following techniques and which 4 key points you would
use when you had to teach these techniques to your peers:
- Dribbling
- 4 ways of passing
- Lay-up
- Set-shot

4) Explain the effectiveness of man to man defence.

5) Explain 2 different fitness components used in basketball

6
Criterion B: preparation sheet – lesson 2

Task given for this lesson, regarding to your role:

I will introduce to them the technique and explain to them what it is used
for and when.

Exercise 1: explanation (design/explain):

First, they must get warmed up for throwing so they will all throw the ball
to each other for 2 minutes. They will do that with the correct technique
for the set shot, which I will show to them at the beginning of the
exercise.
Drawing of the exercise:

Equipment needed:
1 basketball.
Why did you choose this exercise/rule (justify)?
I chose this exercise as they need to get used to throwing the ball and getting
comfortable with it. They must first see the technique so that they can start
working on it.

7
Exercise 2: explanation (design/explain):
Two very important factors in a set shot is strength/distance and aim. This
must be practiced for it to be good. I will always be Infront of the one with
the ball. The person with the ball will then throw the ball towards me
using the set shot technique. I will move around the place and they will
have to try and throw it to me.
Drawing of the exercise:

Equipment needed:
1 basketball.

Why did you choose this exercise/rule (justify)?

Aim and strength are the key things in having a good set shot. Therefore,
it is very important for that to be practiced. This exercise is also good as it
will really progress our team and slowly build them up to be as best as
they can. I also chose this exercise as it incorporates both aim and
strength to make a god throw.

8
Exercise 3: explanation (design/explain):
In this exercise they will use the skills that they have just learnt. They will
stand in different points on the court, and they will shoot at the basket.
They will just keep on doing that until they run out of time.
Drawing of the exercise:

Equipment needed:
3 basketballs
1 basket/hoop

Why did you choose this exercise/rule (justify)?

This is very important as they will have to use all the skills that they have
learnt and use them in the exercise. They will be practicing how it would
be in a proper game which is very important. The should already be able
to get some balls in the hoop as the exercises should have helped.

9
Feedback after lesson 2:

Feedback received from peers or teacher:

My team told me that what I was doing was good and that it fits with what they
expect me to do. They said that they all have improved which I saw and that
they feel comfortable with the set shot now.

Analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of your lesson plan:

The plan was very well made as I had enough time to de everything that I
wanted. They all also managed to have an improvement in those15-20 minutes
that they had. Overall, my plan was well made and constructed well.

Reflect on your performance as a coach/manager:

I think that I did a good job of coaching my team as they all understood what to
do and I also showed them the techniques which made it easier for them as it
was visual rather than me just telling them.

Reflect on your performance as a basketball player:

I did well here as I managed to follow through all of the exercises that I have
been assigned to do. I definitely improved my skills from the start of the lesson
to the end. I listened to the other coaches and participated with them which
made it easier for everyone else.

Please use this feedback to improve/adapt your

development plan for lesson 3!

10
Criterion B: preparation sheet – lesson 3

Task given for this lesson, regarding to your role:

My task is to teach my team how to do layups and if they already know
how to, to make them improve.
Exercise 1: explanation (design/explain):
Jumping is one of the key factors in a layup therefore the first excercise
for them will be to look at my technique of jumping up towards the
backboard. They will then try the same for themselves and try to reach up
as highs as possible. The closer they get to the rim of the basket, the
better they do.
Drawing of the exercise:

Equipment needed:
Basketball basket
Why did you choose this exercise/rule (justify)?
The correct jumping technique is key to a good layup. They must first
master the jump so that they will be able to finish well with the ball. This
will also improve their body strength and help them when they need it
during a game.

11
Exercise 2: explanation (design/explain):
In this exercise they must throw the ball correctly. The ball must sit on
their fingers with a small gap between the palm and the ball. They must
all then just push vertically up as high as possible by flicking their fingers.
This should cause the ball to backspin and the ball should come directly
down back to them, if done correctly.
Drawing of the exercise:

Equipment needed:
3 basketballs

Why did you choose this exercise/rule (justify)?

This is also an essential part in a layup and not mastering this skill, will
make it very hard for them to get the ball in the basket. The two main
parts of the layup is the jump and then the throw, therefore it is important
to master both of those techniques.

12
Exercise 3: explanation (design/explain):
In this exercise, they will practice the full movement of the layup. They
will all have to practice by aiming the ball towards the corner of the box
drawn. They will have to jump as high as possible and then use the
throwing technique to get the ball in the basket.
Drawing of the exercise:

Equipment needed:
3 basketballs
1 basketball basket
Why did you choose this exercise/rule (justify)?
This is obviously important as it is the full movement of the layup. If it
was not done they would not know how to put the whole shot together
and it would end up badly for them. That is why they need to practice this
as much as possible.

13
Feedback after lesson 3:

Feedback received from peers or teacher:

My team told me that they have improved quite a lot which I could see.
Sometimes some said that the exercise was taking too long which could make it
a bit boring. One of my team members wasn’t very happy with jumping which
made it a bit hard for her. However, it was good overall.
Analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of your lesson plan:
Since there were only three exercises, they all had to be long. This was effective
to improve their skills, however it could have gotten a bit boring every now and
then.
Reflect on your performance as a coach/manager:
I think that I did very well as I was paying attention to everybody equally. I
pointed out their flaws and their good points and told them how to improve. I
tried to listen to my teammates and adapt my exercise to their comfort.
Reflect on your performance as a basketball player:
I did very well as I was very committed. I improved all skills practiced in the

lesson which I think is the most important thing in the lessons. I am ready for

the tournament and am keen on trying the new skills learnt.

14
Preparation sheet tournament (managers only) lesson 4:

The following questions may help you to organise your tournament!

Tournament schedule:
 How many teams/ players are playing?

 How many fields (much space) are (is) available?

 How much time do you have (explanation/ setting- and cleaning up/

change)?
 What kind of match schedule (e.g. (semi)finals/ knock out/move up-

move down, etc.)?

 How many matches (for everyone the same?)?

 Administration of the results.

 Publication of the necessary information (on whiteboard?).

Rules:
 Which rules do you have for the games?

 What determines the final ranking? Do you hand out awards/ prizes?

Organising the gym/ sports-hall:

 What equipment do you need?

Allotment of duties:
 Who makes the match schedule?

 Who explains the schedule and the rules to the class?

 Who is responsible for the time-planning?

 Who will be referee/ keep the scores, do the administration/ do the

prize giving?
 Who will set up and clean up the fields?

Your planning should consist of maximum two pages A4 and you

need to bring them to the lesson!

15
Criterion D: final evaluation

Write an evaluation of minimum 300 words and include the following

topics:

 Have you improved your ATL skill: self-management?

o Explain why (not)!

Extra: improvements for the unit?

I think that I really have achieved my personal goal, as I really have
improved my set shot and passing and dribbling. I had good team
members who coached me the passing and dribbling which really helped. I
have improved all my skills as a whole. All the practice that we have done
in the lessons helped at the tournament. Occasionally my team members
that my exercise has gotten a bit boring which stops their motivation.
Maybe next time I should probably make exercises that are more fun for
them so that they enjoy as well as learn something from it. Looking at the
first lesson, I could see that some of my team members were struggling
with the set shot. I have taught them the right techniques, and in the
tournament I could really see an improvement. When doing the exercises,
I always participated and try to listen and understand what the coaches
were telling me to do. I tried to improve my flaws. During the tournament
I did a very good job as I have scored some shots and also cooperated
with my team, I also used the skills they taught me. Teaching my peers
was sometimes hard as sometimes one of them went off track and start
doing their own thing which could have made it a bit harder for me. I have
definitely improved my self management, as I am aware that people are
paying attention to what I am teaching them and their skills can sort of
also depend on me. I have tried helping them and trying to organize
things that will improve their overall skills.
