EXERCISE NO. 14

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

GIO: To distinguish the various endocrine glands

SIO:
1. Enumerate the different endocrine glands and identify their hormones
• HYPOTHALAMUS
✓ anti-diuretic hormone hormone
(ADH) ✓ gonadotrophin releasing
✓ oxytocin hormone (GnRH)
✓ Dopamine ✓ growth hormone
✓ corticotrophin releasing releasing hormone
hormone (GHRH)
✓ thyrotrophin releasing ✓ somatostatin
• PITUITARY GLAND
✓ luteinising hormone (LH) ✓ Thyroid stimulating
✓ follicle-stimulating hormone (TSH)
hormone (FSH) ✓ Adrenocorticotrophic
✓ prolactin hormone
✓ Growth hormone

• PINEAL GLAND
✓ Melatonin
• THYROID GLAND
✓ tri-iodothyronine (T3)
✓ thyroxine (T4)
✓ calcitonin
• PARATHYROID GLAND

✓ parathyroid hormone (PTH)

• ADRENAL FLAND

✓ adrenaline
✓ , cortisol,
✓ aldosterone,
✓ DHEA,
✓ Testosterone

• PANCREAS

✓ insulin
✓ , glucagon,
✓ somatostatin,
✓ vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)

• OVARIES

✓ oestrogen,
✓ progesterone,
✓ Testosterone
✓ , anti-mullerian hormone (AMH),
✓ Inhibin A and Inhibin B

• TESTES

✓ testosterone,
✓ anti-mullerian hormone (AMH),
✓ estradiol,
✓ inhibin B
2. Describe the functions of the identified hormones

HYPOTHALAMUS HORMONE’S FUNCTION

- they hypothalamus links the hormonal and nervous systems. Its hormones keep the
body stable. They influence sleep rhythms, alertness, appetite, body weight, thirst,
blood pressure, heart rate, sex drive, learning, memory, mood and how the body
responds to being sick
PITUITARY GLAND HORMONES’D FUNCTIONS-
- the pituitary gland helps control other glands and makes hormones that control blood
pressure, blood sugar levels, response to stress, menstruation, sperm production,
bone growth, muscle mass, contractions during childbirth, making breastmilk and
bonding between mother and baby
PINEAL GLAND HORMONES’S FUNTIONS
- Sleep cycle
THYROID GLAND HORMONE’S FUNCTIONS
- metabolism, bone growth, energy levels, body temperature, how the cells use oxygen,
heart rate, blood flow, calcium levels, vitamin metabolism, brain development in babies
and children, and reproduction
PARATHYROID GLAND HORMONE’S FUNCTIONS
- regulating calcium levels in blood
ADRENAL GLANDS HOPRMOSE FUNCTIONS
- stress response and blood pressure/salt and water control, blood sugar levels,
energy, development of sex organs, heart rate, attention, inflammation, development
of the fetus
PANCREAS HORMONE’S FUNCTIONS
- Blood sugar control
OVARIES
- Female characteristics, strong and releasing egg.
TESTES
- Male characteristics, sperm production
3. Draw an entire human body and illustrate with labels the location of these
endocrine glands.
