Lesson 1: Solving routine and non-routine problems involving division of 3- to 4-digit
numbers by 1- to 2-digit numbers including money using appropriate problem-solving
strategies and tools.

How do we solve routine word problems involving division?

Steps on Solving Routine Problems
Read and understand the problem. Find the necessary information.
Angela helps her father in the delivery of their 3 600 vegetable seedlings. If
they will place packs of seedlings in a box, how many boxes will they need?
The steps in solving routine problems are:

Step 1: Understand
• Know what is asked: How many boxes will they need?
• Know the given facts: 3,600 vegetable seedlings and a box of 24 seedlings

Step 2: Plan
• Determine the operation to be used: Division
• Write the number sentence: 3 600÷24=n

Lesson 1: Josehpine M. Agustin, Sta. Maria Central School SPED Center

Lesson 2 & 3: Verna Lynn R. Lasay, Don Gregorio Evangelista Memorial School

Step 3: Solve
• Solve using the operation involving division of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 1- to 2-
digit numbers. Write the correct units or label your answer.
• Show your solution: 3 600÷24= 150 boxes

Step 4: Check and Look Back

• Review and check your answer.
• See if your answer makes sense and state the complete answer.
• You can use a calculator to divide 3 600÷24, or multiply 150 by 24.

Value Infusion: What value is being developed by Angela? If you were Angela, are you
going to do the same? Why?

How do we solve Non-routine word problems involving division?

Steps on Solving Non-Routine Problems
Read and understand the problem. Find the necessary information.

Mang Julio bought an electric sewing machine for P9,360 for his Edukasyon
Pangtahanan at Pangkabuhayan and Technology & Livelihood Education classes
in an installment. How much will he pay each month if he has a year to pay for it?

The steps in solving nonroutine problems are:

Step 1: Understand
• Know what is asked: How much will he pay each month if he has a year to
pay for it?
• Know the given facts: Php 9,360 and a year (12 months)
Step 2: Plan
• Determine the operation to be used: Division
• Write the number sentence: 9,360÷12=n
Step 3: Solve
• Show your solution: 9,360÷12= Php780
• Other ways to solve non-routine word problems involving division are;
a. Listing method/ Table method
b. Working backward
Step 4: Check and Look Back
• Review and recheck your answer by working backward and table method.
Examples:
1. Working Backward
Solution: 12x780=9,360
2. Table Method
Solution: n = 9,360-(12x780)
n = 0, which means Mang Julio completed the installment.

SAQ-1: When do we use routine and non-routine word problems involving division?
SAQ-2: In which situation in our lives can we use routine and non-routine problem involving
division?

Let’s Practice! (Write your answers on separate sheets.)

ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Solve the following routine word problems using the 4-way step and mathematical
strategy.
1. Fina has a P 1,000 bill. How many bills will she have if it is to change for Php 50?
2. A farmer earned a total of P 2,700 by selling watermelons (pakwan) from his farm.
If each kilo costs P 25, how many kilos of watermelons did he sell?

ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Solve the non-routine word problem using 4-way step and mathematical strategy.

Janna has P 600. She wants to buy a box of cereal and a box of chocolate drinks that
both costs P 300. If each mini pack inside a cereal box costs P5 each and each sachet inside
the chocolate box costs P 20 each, how many mini packs of cereal and sachets of chocolate
drinks should Janna buy?

Lesson 3: Solving Multi-Step Non-Routine Problems Involving Division and any other
Operations

How can we solve multi-step non- routine problems involving division and any other
operations?

Solving non-routine problems has no immediate strategy to solve because

they are many ways to find the answer. Solving non-routine problems is essential
to improve your problem-solving skills.
There are many methods to solve multi-step non-routine problems. These are the
following:
a. Bar modelling c. Diagrams and tables e. Trial and Error
b. Listing method d. Tables and Diagrams f. Illustrations

In using any strategies, we must follow these steps to find the answer:
Understand → Plan → Solve → Check and Look back
VALUE INFUSION: Following the rules or steps is important in our critical thinking. Our
thoughts will become clear and organize. Just like if we encounter problems in life, if we
understand the problem, plan out, find the solution, and look back how it becomes meaningful.

Read and solve the problem below.

If we add the two numbers the sum is 12. Then, if we divide the 2 numbers the
quotient is 3. What are these 2 numbers?
Let us solve the problem using these 4 steps:

Step 1: UNDERSTAND

What are the hidden questions? There is no hidden question.
Sum of 2 numbers is 12
What are the given facts?

Addition the first number and B is the second
and number.
Division The sum of 2 numbers is 27.
What operations will be used?
A + B = 12 +
The difference of 2 numbers is 3.
A B 3
=
What is the number
sentence?
A+B= 27 and A B= 3

Step 3: SOLVE
Using listing method let us find the 2 numbers with the sum of 27.
1 and 11 2 and 10 3 and 9 4 and 8 5 and 7 6 and 6

Next, From the list, let us find the quotient of 3 from the following:
11 and 1 = 11 9 and 3 =3 7 and 5 =1.4
10 and 2 = 5 8 and 4 = 2 6 and 6 = 1

Step 4: CHECK and LOOK BACK

If we add the two numbers 9 and 3 the sum is 12. Then, if we divide 9 and 3 the quotient
is 3.
