ACTIVITY SHEET IN MATHEMATICS

Grade: 9 Week: 4 Quarter: 2

I. Objective
The learner derives the laws of radicals. (M9AL-IIf-2)

II. Input/ Discussion

 The laws of radicals are derived directly from the laws of exponents by means
n
of the definition √a ͫ = am/n.
 The laws are designed to make simplification much easier.
 Step 1: Transform the radical into exponential form.
Step 2: Factor the radicand if necessary.

LAWS OF RADICALS

1. ( √𝒂)n = 𝜶 𝒏 =𝜶 𝒏 =a

Examples: ( √𝟓)3 = 𝟓 =𝟓 = 51 = 5

Examples: √𝟏𝟖 = 𝟏𝟖 = (𝟗 · 𝟐) =𝟗 ▪𝟐 = √𝟗 ▪ √𝟐 = 𝟑√𝟐

4. √𝒂 = √ √𝒂 or √ 𝒎√𝒂

𝟔 𝟑
Examples: √𝟖 = √ √𝟖 = √𝟐 (Since the radicand 8 is a perfect cube, the
inner index must be 3).
𝟔 𝟑 𝟑

√𝟒 = √𝟒 = √𝟐 (Since the radicand 4 is a perfect square, the
inner index must be 2).
III. Practice Task

Match the examples in column A to the laws of radicals in column B. Write only the letter
before the number.
