A Semi-detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 7

(Domain 4, Indicator 7)
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard
The learners demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of measurement.

B. Performance Standard
The learners are able to formulate real-life problems involving measurements and
solve this using variety of strategies.

C. Learning Competencies/Objectives

The learner approximates the measures of quantities particularly length, weight/

perimeter. (M7ME-IIb-2 )
1. Describe and determine the perimeter of a closed plane figures.
2. Use appropriate formula in finding the perimeter of a polygon.
3. Show enthusiasm in performing any assigned task.
VALUES INTEGRATION: Cooperation and Accuracy (Domain 1, Indicator
1)

II. Content: Measurement

Topic: Measuring Perimeter

III. Learning Resources

A. Reference
1. Teacher’s Guide: pages 122-123
2. Learner’s Material pages: 96-97
3. Textbook pages: E-Math 7 page 104-107 and Simplified Math 7 page 58-59
4. Additional materials from learning resource (LR) portal

B. Other Learning Resources

Cut outs polygon, activity sheets, tape measure, ruler, and laptop.

IV. Procedures
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance
4. Motivation
The students identify whether the given plane figure is regular or irregular
polygon.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

Precise measurements are needed for the architects, engineers and
carpenters to build a house or building. Not only professionals need this
knowledge, we can also use this in our daily living, example if you want to
provide fencing around your backyard you need to know the perimeter of your
backyard. If you want to lay a pathway, you also need the knowledge in
perimeter.

The students are group into five. Let them use a ruler to find the
length and width of the rectangular objects. Write the measurements to
the nearest centimeter. Then calculate the distance around the object.
(Domain 2, Indicator 4)

Worksheet What to measure Length (cm) Width (cm) Distance around

#1 the object (cm)
Book
Sheet of paper
Notebook
Windowpane

C. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson

From the above activity, the students determine that the distance around
the object is the perimeter. The perimeter of a plane figure can be found by
adding the lengths of its side.
Definition The sum of the lengths of the sides of a polygon is called the perimeter (P)
of the polygon. A regular polygon is a polygon having all sides congruent and
all angles congruent.

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1.

Illustrative examples:
Find the perimeter of each polygon.
a.
5cm 7 cm Solution: P= 5 + 7 + 9 = 21cm

9 cm

b. 4m

8m 8m 5m Solution: P = 8 + 8 +4 +5+4 = 29m

4m

8m

E. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #2.

Do we have to measure every side to work out perimeter? Why?Why
not? (Domain 1,indicator 3)
Only two measurements, the length and the width, are needed to find the
perimeter of a rectangle.
l

w
Discuss also how to find the perimeter of a regular polygon using a
formula.

Formula Perimeter of Rectangle and Regular Polygons

The perimeter (P) of a rectangle with length (l) and width (w) is given by:
P = 2l + 2w or P = 2(l + w)
Equilateral Triangle
s Regular Regular
s Heptagon Pentagon
s
P = 3s P = 7s P = 5s

Illustrative Examples:

Find the perimeter of each polygon

10cm
a. 5cm

Solution: P =2l +2w Write the formula for perimeter of a

rectangle
P = 2(10) + 2(5) Replace 1 with 10 and w with 5

b. regular octagon: side, 9m

Solution: An octagon is a polygon with eight sides. Since the

octagon is regular, P = 8s.

P= 8s Write the formula for the perimeter of an octagon

P= 8(9) Replace s with 9.
P = 72 The perimeter is 72m

F. Developing mastery (Look formative assessment 3)

Worksheet #2 Ask the students to create a drawing with polygons (Domain 1, Indicator
1 and Domain 3, Indicator 6) such as rectangles, pentagons, squares, hexagon,
etc. Ask your student to use ruler to measure the sides in centimeter. After that
ask your students to find the perimeter of their pictures. Instruct your students
to find the perimeter of each shape in the picture separately first. After that,
have them add the perimeter of each shape to find the perimeter of the entire
picture.

G. Finding practical application of the concepts and skills in daily living.

Sarah has 4 feet by 3 feet garden. What is the perimeter of Sarah’s garden?

H. Making generalization and abstractions about the lesson.

Finding the perimeter of a plane figure can be found by adding the lengths
of its sides if it’s an irregular polygon and using a formula if it’s a rectangle or
regular polygon.

I. Evaluating learning
Group the students into five. Each group shall be given a set of
problems with five questions per set; everyone is required to find the
perimeter of a plane figure. After all the groups have done the activity, let
them present their work in class. (Domain 1, indicator 2)The group with the
highest number of correct answers shall earn the highest points and the other
respective groups will be rewarded with corresponding points. (Domain 2,
indicator 5)

Worksheet #3 Find the perimeter of each polygon.

1.

2. Regular octagon: side, 9 m
3. Regular nonagon: side, 8 in.
4. 9ft

5. Regular hexagon: side, 5 in.

J. Additional activities for application or remediation.
