FOREWORD

First of all, we would like to thank Allah SWT, because of His Grace and
Ridho, we were able to complete an English paper entitled "Expressing Likes and
Dislikes, Offering and Requesting", this paper is to fulfill one of the assignments
in the English course. On this occasion, we would like to thank our lecturers who
guided us in doing the work of this paper so that we can complete the task of this
paper on time.
In this paper we discuss so that readers can expand their knowledge of
Introduction to English. This paper contains the background, objectives,
formulation of the contents of the article and how to make conclusions and
suggestions regarding Expressing Likes and Dislikes, Offering and Requesting.
We realize that the preparation of this paper is still far from perfect, however, it
has provided benefits for us as compilers, and hopefully this paper can provide
broader insights to readers. Therefore, we welcome all criticism and suggestions
from readers so that we can improve next paper.

CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

1.1 BACKGROUND
English is international language. If we can speak English well, we can
communicate with all people in the world. And then we also can get insight and
science for our nation, we can read English literature, listen international radio,
and watch international movie. So, we can get sciences for all category.
Not only to add skill international language, learn English make easier to
get a job.
Speak international language give as many advantage for every one.
Make us ready to stay anywhere. Therefore, it is necessary to learn grammar or
tenses in English so that we can speak English more easy. We also understand
how to make sentence correctly

1.2 FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM


The things we will discuss are:
1. How to Submit Likes?
2. How to Submit Dislike?
3. What is Offering, and what is it used for?
4. What is requesting, and its uses?

1.3 OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS


The purpose of this paper is for us to know and get new knowledge about
Expressing Like and Dislike, Offering and Requesting. The benefit of this paper
is that it can provide benefits both theoretically and practically. The expected
benefit from the results of this paper is that it can provide new knowledge and
experience for the community in using Expressing Like and Dislike, Offering
and Requesting in everyday life.
CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

2.1 HOW EXPRESSING LIKE AND DISLIKE

A. DEFINITION EXPRESSION OF LIKE AND DISLIKE

Expression of like means an expression or expression that expresses liking /


liking for something. Expressing like means expressing liking.
Expression of dislike means an expression or expression that expresses
dislike/hate towards something. Expressing dislike means expressing dislike.
EXAMPLE EXPRESSING LIKE AND DISLIKE

Expressing Like Expressing Dislike

I like coffee. I don't like coffee.

I like dancing. I detest dancing.

I love singing. I dislike singing.

I enjoy reading novel. I hate reading novel.

I am crazy about you. I can't stand with you.

I am very fond of cooking. I don't think I like cooking.

I am very keen on flowers. I am not keen on flowers.

I really enjoy learning English. I am fed up with learning English.

SAMPLE CONVERSATION EXPRESSING LIKE AND DISLIKE

Waiter : Doyouwantsomedrinks?
Dion : Yes, I want a glass of coffee, please. And you, Tom?
Tomi : Orange juice, please.
Waiter : Alright, please wait.
Dion : Why don’t you order a glass of coffee? Don’t you like coffee?
Tom : Yeah, I don’t think I like coffee. I prefer juice because for me, it’s
healthier than coffee and how about you?
Dion     : I am very fond of coffee because I think it can refresh my mind. The
first time I drank coffee when I was in Senior high School so that’s why I’m crazy
about it.

a. Below is a formula that can be used to express dislike:


Subject + dislike/ dislike(s) + object (noun/verb-ing)
Subject + don’t like/ doesn’t like + object (noun/verb-ing)
Subject + hate/ hate(s) + object (noun/verb-ing)
Subject + to be + fed up with + object (noun/verb-ing)
Subject + can’t stand with + object (noun/verb-ing)

b. An example of using an expression of dislike is like this:


“I loathe this situation.”
“Aku benci situasi ini.”

“I cannot stand smelling this food.”


“Aku gak tahan mencium makanan ini.”

“I dislike your top.”


“Aku gak suka baju kamu.”
“You hate me, huh?”

“Kamu benci aku ya?”

That's an example of a sentence that shows a dislike of something.


Just like how to express what we like, we can also add adverbs in the
sentence we want to use.

2.2 OFFERING AND REQUESTING

2.2 OFFERING ( MENAWARKAN)

When we offer ourselves to do something, we usually use the expression


As follows :
Shall I carry that suitcase for you ?
Shall I bring you some tea now ?
Shall I get you some chocolate ?
Shall I take you the glasses ?
Answer :
(+) Thank you very much
Thank you so much
Thank a lot
(-) No,thanks

2.3 REQUESTING (PERMINTAAN)

When we ask other people to do something for us – in a polite way –


we usually use the following expressions:

Chould you open the door, please ?


Chould You……….. Chould you bring my bag ?
Chould you help me ?

Whould you mind opening the door ?


Would you mind…….. Whould you mind bringing my bag ?

Whould you mind helping me ?

To say "okay" in answering the questions above, you can use the
following words:

Sure, I will. Okey, I will.


All right. Of course, I will
Yes,I will Certainly.

To state "okay" in response to a request in the form of a ban, the


following words can be used:

Sure, I won’t Okey, I won’t


All right, I won’t Of course, I won’t
No, I wont Etc.

e.g (contoh) :
1. Don’t disturb me, please.
All right, I won’t.
2. Don’t smoke here,please.
Okey, I won’t

To express offer and request, you can also use the words bring, take,
get, send and lend with the following pattern:

Shall I send him a letter ?


Her a card ?
Could you give them the phone?

3.1 CONCLUSION

From the description above, we can see that it is important to express


like and dislikes in daily life and we must use it properly in accordance with
applicable regulations.

3.2 SUGGESTION

In writing this paper the author realizes that there are still some
shortcomings in various ways. Therefore, constructive criticism and
suggestions from readers are highly expected by us to improve the writing on
other occasions. Hopefully this paper can be useful for us, readers, and all
circles.
