Activity: Beam Problems

Problem 3.1. Solve for the reactions on the supports on the beam shown below

𝐺𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛:

𝑅𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑: 𝑅1 , 𝑅2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑅3

𝑆𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠:

∑ 𝐻 = 0; 𝐻1 = 0; 𝐻2 = 0

∑ 𝑉 = 0; 𝑅1 + 𝑅2 + 𝑇 + 𝑇 = 0

Since 𝑇1 𝑖𝑠 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑇2 , then

𝐿 6
𝑇 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝐿) = (7.5 + 5)(6) = 225𝑘𝑁
2 2
Calculate the distance of trapezoidal load acting to its gravity

𝑋𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 𝑋1 + 𝑋2

𝐿 𝑎 + 2(𝑏) 6 7.5 + 2(5)

𝑋1 = ( )= ( ) = 2.80𝑚
3 𝑎+𝑏 3 7.5 + 5

𝐿 𝑎 + 2(𝑏) 6 7.5 + 2(5)

𝑋2 = ( )= ( ) = 2.80𝑚
3 𝑎+𝑏 3 7.5 + 5

𝑋𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = (2.80 + 2.80)𝑚 = 5.60𝑚

Substitute the following into the formula

𝑅1 ((6 − 1) + 6) + (225(5 − 5.60) + 6) + (225(5.60 − 1) = 0

𝑅1 (11) = 906
