Adapt, Adjust, and Manage

Being busy doesn’t always mean being productive. There are those
who work a lot, but they don’t actually accomplish anything or
they do a little of what they are supposed to do. I have been in
different kinds of working environment with different kinds of
managers, but I have not yet encountered a purposeful one among
the few. I really hope to work with this kind of boss someday.

I have worked with a procrastinator and this one the hardest to

work with. This manager performs the daily tasks but seldom has
the push to go beyond what is necessary or think outside the
box. That is why I am challenged to take the initiative, but I
also see this as an opportunity to shine and be a better
employee.

There is also this manager who is considered “the disengaged”

and I often get the blame because of the so-called “defensive
avoidance” attitude. When a certain problem is not acknowledged,
I often end up as the person being pointed at. When I was aware
of this, and because I already learned the lesson, I took time
to sit down and analyze certain situations. I even see myself
thinking in advance because I already know for a fact that such
issues have already happened before and it will be easier to
deal with the consequences. Also, I anticipate any concerns and,
as much as possible, avoid any of these from happening sooner or
later.

A distracted manager is very common in my experience. He or she

has very the energy but lacks focus. I have worked with an
enthusiastic manager but ends up with no or very little
accomplishment because of confusion. Whenever there is pressure,
he becomes desperate. He feels that there is a need to do
something better as soon as possible but the outcome is not the
best that everyone expects.

They may be few but everyone wants to work with them because
they are the most effective. I am one who hopes to be with this
kind of manager. I look forward to be with the energetic and
focused person that will direct me to a better position. But
right now, all I need is to learn how to adjust, adapt, and
manage being with the manager who is not the purposeful one.
While doing so, I will do my best to realize the lessons with
those that I have already worked with and avoid making the same
mistakes because my goal is to become a purposeful manager just
like the others.
