Dragon Tail Shawl – HDC Pattern by Linda Styles (07/06/2017)

Yarn: One Caron Cake, any colour (or any yarn to suit your
preference)
Hook Size: 5mm (or size to suit your yarn).

Work with a semi-loose tension as this is a thick yarn and it needs

to have some stretch, especially around the curved edge so it sits
well around your shoulders – you will see what I mean as it works
up.

I have adapted the pattern to fit the hdc stitch (yo, insert hook, yo, pull loop through, yo over,
pull through all 3 loops on hook).

Notes on stitches
For Row 1, I crocheted into the single back loops of the starting chain. For Row 2 onwards, I
crocheted into both top loops of each stitch from previous rows.

Notes on turning at start of each row

I used the same turning direction as in the original video, e.g. turn your work from your right
across your front to your left. So if you were looking down from the top it would be turned
clockwise.
I did this for every row except for the Scale Tip Row 5, which I turned anti-clockwise. I hope
this makes sense to you – I just liked the aesthetic outcome of turning these ways.

Row 1: Start with Ch 4, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, (2hdc in next ch), hdc in last ch.
Row 2: Ch1, turn, hdc, [(2hdc in next st) twice], hdc.
Row 3: Ch1, turn. hdc to last 3 stitches, (2hdc in next st), hdc, hdc.
Row 4: Ch1, turn, hdc, [(2hdc in next st) twice], hdc to end.
Row 5: (Scale Tip) Ch2, turn, slst into 2nd ch from hook, [slst (x number of scale rows plus
one), ch1, hdc to last 3 stitches, (2hdc in next st), hdc, hdc.

Repeat Rows 4 and 3 for each scale until desired size, then
Repeat Row 5 for the scale tip.
Continue until shawl is desired length or until the caron cake
has been used up.
End on a Final Row 5 where you sl st all the way to the end,
then finish off.

For my shawl I have done 3 repeats of each scale size then I

finished with as big a scale as I could get from the remaining
yarn in the Caron Cake. See guide below.
I did: 4, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 12, 12, 12, 14 rows.
Row 5 - Guide for scale sizes – How many slip stitches for each scale size?
4 Rows - Ch2, turn, 6 slst (1 slst into 2nd ch from hook, then 5 slst), [hdc (as above)]
6 Rows - Ch2, turn, 8 slst (1 slst into 2nd ch from hook, then 7 slst), [hdc (as above)]
8 Rows - Ch2, turn, 10 slst (1 slst into 2nd ch from hook, then 9 slst), [hdc (as above)]
10 Rows - Ch2, turn, 12 slst (1 slst into 2nd ch from hook, then 11 slst), [hdc (as above)]
12 Rows - Ch2, turn, 14 slst (1 slst into 2nd ch from hook, then 13 slst), [hdc (as above)]
14 Rows - Ch2, turn, 16 slst (1 slst into 2nd ch from hook, then 15 slst), [hdc (as above)]
