A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 9

I. Objectives:
At the end of the 1 hour discussion about Proportional Segments, at least 80% of
the grade 9 students will be able to do the following with at least 85% degree of success.

a. describe a proportion;
b. solve for the lengths of the unknown segments of the given proportion; and
c. exhibit willingness in solving proportional segments through real life problems.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Unit Topic: Similarity

Focus: Proportional Segments

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparation

Good afternoon, class! Good afternoon, Ma’am!

Let us all bow our heads and feel the presence of (Students will stand)
the Lord. “Our father in heaven holy be thy name; thy
(The student will lead the prayer) kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it
is in heaven… Amen!

May I ask the secretary to please take a

screenshot of the attendees of today’s class? (Student will do so)
Okay. Thank you!
How’s your day so (We’re good, Ma’am)
far? That’s nice to
hear.

B. Motivation

I think you’re all set now.

So, before we proceed to our entire lesson, I
want you to take a look at this lemon on my hand (The students will follow the
first.

Alright! If I am going to slice the lemon in the instruction) It will be divided into two.
middle, what will happen to it?

Very good!
Therefore, one lemon is good for how many Two persons.
persons?

That is correct.
What if I have two lemons? And I’m going to slice
them both at the middle, how many persons will They will be good for 4 persons then.
benefit from them?

Correct!
Then we can write it this way.
1:2 and 2:4.
That the ratio of a lemon to persons after being
sliced is 1:2 and the ratio of 2 lemons to the
people that will benefit from them after being Yes, Ma’am!
sliced is 2:4. Correct?

Awesome!
The question now is, are these ratios proportional Yes, Ma’am. They are.
to each other?
By multiplying the means and the extremes,
How did you know? Ma’am.

Very
good!
means
1:2 = 2:4
extremes

After multiplying the means and extremes of the

ratios, it will lead us to 4=4. Therefore, the two
ratios really are in proportion.
Alright! So, we reviewed ration and proportion
because it has something to do with our topic
for today.

Are you ready?

Yes, Ma’am!
C. Abstraction and Comparison

Before we proceed, I’m going to flash some

illustrations and you have to tell me what kind
of lines and part of line are they. Understood?
Yes, Ma’am!
Perfect!
So here is the first illustration.

What kind of lines are these?

They are parallel lines, Ma’am.
That’s correct!
Next,

What about this illustration?

Awesome! That shows intersecting lines, Ma’am.
(The third illustration will be flashed)

Those are perpendicular lines, Ma’am.

Very good.

(The fourth illustrations will pop up)

That is a ray, Ma’am.

And the last but not the least.

That part of line is a segment, Ma’am.

Lovely!

So, when we combine words Proportion and

Segment, we are talking about what?
Segments that are in proportion.
Very good!
We will be discussing segments that are
proportional to each other.
Because our main focus for today is Proportional
Segments.

I have here a pair of yarn with different

measures. The short one measures 6 inches while
the longer yarn measures 12 inches.

Now, if I will cut the yarn into two pieces with a

ratio 2:4, how are you going to cut the longer
yarn so that they will become proportional to
each other. We have to cut it in the ratio 4:8 to it in
I need a boy volunteer. proportion the short yarn, Ma’am.

Oh, really? 4:8?

How is that? Will you please show us? Sure, Ma’am.
The short yarn was cut out in a ratio of 2:4 and
if the longer yarn will be cut into 4:8, by
multiplying the means and extremes,
means
2:4 = 4:8
extremes
16=16
So, we can say that they are in proportion,
Ma’am.
Very good explanation!

Alright, this time there are ribbons.

They measures 8 inches and 12
inches consecutively.

Now, the longer ribbon was cut into the ratio of

3:9. Same question, how are you going to cut
the shorter ribbon in order for them to be in
proportion to each other?
We have to cut the shorter ribbon it into
I need a volunteer from girls.
the ratio of 2:6, Ma’am.
2:6? Are you sure?
Yes, Ma’am!
Alright then. Go ahead and prove it to the class.
Because the longer ribbon’s ratio is 3:9 after we
cut it, and the shorter is 2:6.

means
3:9 = 2:6
extremes

much. Can you still follow, Yes, Ma’am!

class?
Oh, that’s nice!

So, for my third example, I have here a sample of

Alright. Since everything is clear, based on the
activities we’ve just done, what can you say
about proportion? A proportion is a name we give to a statement
that two ratios are equal, Ma’am.
Very good!

D. Application

Alright then.
I believe that every one of you is now ready for
the activity.
You will be given 10 minutes to finish the
following.

Activity #1
Tell whether the samples are divided
proportionally or not. Show complete solutions.

2 in.
1. 1in.
6 in.
x

2. The distance from you house to your

school is 5km. While the distance from
your house to the market is 7km. Do you
think that the distances are
proportional? How?

3. It is summer time and you want to visit

your relatives in the City. And you want
to bring them Ube Jam. You have 7kg of
Ube from the backyard. And for 3kg of
Ube, it needs 6kg of sugar to make its
taste balance. How many kilograms of
sugar do you need for the remaining kg of
Ube?

E. Generalization

Okay, let us now put into capsule all the learnings

we have learned from today’s discussion.
Who can give me a brief summary about our
discussion? We can say that corresponding segments are
proportional if the segments of one figure
have the same ratio as the segments of the
other.

Awesome!

A proportion is a name we give to a statement

that two ratios are equal.

Very good!
As long as the ratio of a thing is the same as the
ratio of the other one, therefore we can say
that both things are similar and that they are in
proportion.

Anyone else who want to add up?

And it is not just the segment that we can say
are proportional are important, because it is also
important for us to know that things are
proportional to each other. Just like in recipes,
for you to achieve the balance taste you have to
be careful with the measurements of the
ingredients.

That’s so lovely! What a very good insight.

Thank you!

Any more question? All goods, Ma’am!

Are you sure? Yes, Ma’am!

F. Assignment

Okay, since you’re all good.

I will be sending you a copy of your take away
tasks and have them submitted by tomorrow
morning.
Noted, Ma’am.
