What’s In (Review of the previous lesson)

Label the numbered parts of sewing machine.

What’s New (Introduction of new lesson)

Can you guess the jumbled letter words to reveal the word?

1. eivrtcla mtesuarmene

2. oizohnrtal mmeaureesnt
3. facircmereuntil umasremenet -

The body measurements are vertical, horizontal and circumferential. There are two system used: the Metric
System wherein centimeter serve the basic unit and English System where inches are utilized. The enlarge centimeters
and inches are presented as guide for the students to ensure accuracy in the measurement of individuals.

What Is It (Lesson Proper)

How to Take Body Measurements

There are several parts of the body to be measured. These are taken in:
1. Vertical Measurement
2. Horizontal Measurement
3. Circumferential Measurement

The vertical measurement is taken from the top of the body figure to its base.
1. Figure back- taken from the nape down the waist of the back bodice
2. Figure front- taken from the neck point passing over the bust down the waist
3. Bust Height – taken from the neck point down to the highest point of bust.
4. Length of the Blouse - taken from the nape down to the desired length, before or a few units after the waist.
5. Length of Sleeve - taken from the shoulder point down to the desired length in the arms
6. Length of skirt- taken from the waist down to the desired length.

4
1 2 3

The horizontal measurement is taken from the left of the figure to the right.
1. Shoulder- taken from the shoulder point across the back to the other shoulder point.
2. Front chest- taken from one’s front beside the armpit to the other armpit.
3. Bust distance- taken from nipple to nipple.
4. Back width- taken beside the armpit to the other armpit at the back.

1 2 4
3
The circumferential measurement is taken around the body.
1. Bust- taken around the fullest part of the bust and slightly higher at the back.
2. Waist- taken around the smallest part of the torso.
3. Hips- First hip is taken 10 Centimeters or 4 inches from the waist. Place the tape measure around to get first hips.
4. Second hip- taken around the fullest part of the hips.
5. Armhole- taken around the armhole.
6. Arm girth- taken around the arm.

Men’s Body Measurement 2

1. Neck - taken around the neck with the tape resting on

your shoulder. You should put one finger between the tape
and the neck if you want to allow for some extra room.
5 1 2. Chest- taken as a circumference measurement around
6
your chest at the widest point. Stand in a relaxed posture and
2 breath out.
7 3. Waist- taken as a circumference measurement around
your waist just above your belly button. Stand in a relaxed
3 posture and breath out.
9 4. Seat- taken as a circumference measurement around your
8
10 4 seat at the widest part.
5. Shirt length- taken from the top of the shoulder, close to
the mid side of your neck, following your body down to the
11 point where you want your shirt to end.
6. Shoulder width – think of the line going from your armpit
straight upwards to your shoulder. Measure between those
two points and hold the tape measure straight.
7. Arm length – the sleeve length measurement is taken
from the point of your shoulder (where you took the shoulder
width measurement), following your bent arm down to where
you want the sleeve to end. Note 1 Bend your arm slightly when taking this measurement. Note 2 this measurement is
always the full length of the arm. For short sleeve and ¾ sleeves you should still measure the full length of the arm.
8. Wrist – taken as a circumference measurement around you wrist. Note will add movement ease according to the
cuff you select.
9. Hip measurement (for the bottom)- is a circumferential measurement. Note measure directly in the body, not
outside of the garment or on top of a belt.
10. Seat measurement – is a circumferential measurement taken around the seat of your widest point.
11. Inseam- is measured from the crotch along the inner side of the le straight down to the floor. Stand upright, do
not bend the leg and ask someone to help you take measurement.

Efficient and accurate taking of body measurements depend on how competent a tailor or dressmaker is. There
are some pointers that you should observe while taking body measurements. Try to follow them while enjoying
the pleasure you give.

METRIC CONVERSION CHART

Simple calculation is an easy mathematical application used to determine the accurate measurement of body parts,
length and width of materials and cost needed to create apparel. The process in four fundamentals of operations (MDAS)
is involved.

How to Convert Inches and Centimeter

Example:
1. How many inches are there in a 100 centimeters width of fabric?
2. How many centimeters are there in a 60 inches length of fabric?
Answer:
a. Given: 1 inch = 2.54 cm
Width of fabric = 100 cm
Equivalent of an inch to cm = 2.54
Calculation: 100 cm = 39.37 inches
2.54 cm

b. Given: c 1 inch = 2.54 cm

Length of fabric = 60 inches
Equivalent of a cm to an inch = 2.54 cm
Calculation: 60 inches
X 2.54 cm
152.4 cm
What Is More (Lesson Activity)

A. Classify the parts of the body to be measured if Vertical, Horizontal and Circumferential measurement. Write your
answer inside each column.

Vertical Measurement Horizontal Measurement Circumferential Measurement

Bust Length of skirt Arm length Hips Inseam

Front chest Wrist second hip Bust distance Back width
Seat Length of blouse Armhole Length of sleeve Waist
Bust Height Shoulder Arm girth Shirt Length Figure back
Neck Figure back chest

B. Convert Inches and Centimeters

1. Alma bought 19 inches of fabric.

2. Roderick cut 26 inches of cloth.
3. Mr. Lorenzo delivers 50 inches of Cotton fabric every Saturday in town.
4. Jackie sew curtain with 200cm length.
5. Aling Vicky receives to the delivery man 304 cm printed Geena cloth and another 250cm plain Geena cloth.
