1. Historians once thought of the history of
civilization as being limited to those areas
whose influence spread to other areas.
2. Because Africa south of the Sahara has
never been the centre of a civilization,
which had world-wide influence, it used to
be regarded as less important than Europe
or the Islamic world, both of which have
gone through a period of world leadership.
3. Recently, historians have begun to realize
that Africa is far more important than they
had previously thought.
4. As African states have gained their
independence and, consequently, a voice in
world affairs, their importance has
increased.
5. Today’s historians recognized that a full
understanding of human society must
include all societies and not be restricted to
the study of the more favored parts of the
world.
6. Civilization advanced most rapidly where
populations were relatively dense, and
where there was some sort of
communication between peoples.

2. Оскільки частина Африки на південь
від Сахари ніколи не була перлиною
світової цивілізації, її завжди вважали
другорядною територією на відміну від
Європи та країн Ісламу, які у свій час
були світовими територіально-
історичними лідерами.
3. І тільки нещодавно історики збагнули
свою помилку – Африка є, мабуть,
набагато важливішою частиною світу в
історичному значенні, ніж її вважали
раніше.
4. Світовому визнанню африканського
континенту, перш за все, сприяв той
факт, що більшість країн Африки стали
незалежними, внаслідок чого й мали
право голосу у світовій цивілізації.
5. Сучасні історики впевнені, що для
того, щоб збагнути сутність людського
буття, варто дослідити світ у цілому, не
роблячи винятків, вивчаючи тільки
найбільш цивілізовані суспільства.
6. Цивілізація завжди швидко
розвивалась у густонаселених районах,
тобто там, де люди мали постійну нагоду
спілкуватися.
