Introduction

Skipping meals have been a common problem for students nowadays. It may be
belittled by many, but it greatly affects not only a person’s health but also their academic
performance. Many studies conducted by other researchers discuss about the effects of
skipping meals on one’s body.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, The word ‘meal’ can be defined as an act
or the time of eating a portion satisfy appetite. There are three most common set meal
times in the Western world yet are practiced on a national scale. These are breakfast,
lunch and dinner. Snack scan also be considered as a type of meal.

This study specifically will discuss how skipping meals of concern the Academic
Performance of Grade 12 students. This study will also argue the factors affecting the
reason why students neglect their meals. This research will help us identify if skipping
meals is a factor to be considered in maintaining a satisfactory academic performance.

Statement of the Problem

This study will be conducted to determine the ramifications if skipping meals in the
academic performance of Grade 12 students of Cantabaco National High School.
Specifically, it intends to provide a clear stand on the following issues:

• What is the profile variable of the respondents in relation to:


• Weekly budget
• School Activities and;
• Food interest

• What are the causes of skipping meals of students?

• What are the effects of skipping meals of students?

• What are the possible recommendations in improving this study?


SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study could benefit the students, teachers, parents, administrators and
future researchers.

STUDENTS. The result of the study will be able to help the students to comprehend the
lessons and prevent skipping meals.

TEACHERS. This study will help the teachers to teach their lessons with ease. It will
also help them to know the certain factors, such as skipping meals that affect the
students’ academic performance.

PARENTS. The result of this study will have an advantage to the parents to lessen their
worries about their children during school days.

ADMINISTRATORS. This will help the school administrators by resolving the issues that
affect the students’ academic performance.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This will help the future researchers to formulate and
recommend a better solution for the said subject.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study will focus on how skipping meals affect the academic performance of Grade
12 students of Cantabaco National High School.

It does not seek to include the effects of skipping meals to individuals, excluding grade
12 students.

However, this study will cover certain factors such as the weekly budget, school
activities and food interest to determine how it affects the number of meals a student
skips.
HYPOTHESIS

The main hypothesis states that skipping meals do not affect the academic performance
of Grade 12 students of Cantabaco National High School. These factors are the basis of
the hypothesis that was proposed for testing the relationship of skipping meals amd
academic performance .

• There is no significant relationship between the number of meals skipped to the


academic performance of Grade 12 students of Cantabaco National High School.

• There is no significant difference between the academic performance of students


who skip meals and students who do not skip meals.

• Factors such as school activities, food interest and weekly budget to not concern the
academic performance of grade 12 students.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Skipping meals- not eating at an arbitrarily time.

Academic performance- measurement of student achievement across various


academic subjects.

Time allotment- time given for the students to eat their meals.

Interest- food preference of the students

Socioeconomic Status- economic and sociological combined total measure of a


person’s work experience and of an individual’s or family’s economic and social position
in relation to others.
