 What comes to mind of Ukrainians when they

hear about Kherson? Without an ounce of
doubt , the first thought that hits them are
watermelons, melons and sea. Though
Europeans know about the Oleshky Sands
(Oleshky Pisky- is the biggest desert in Europe),
the only uninhabited island in Europe,
Jarylgach, also called as the Ukrainian
Maldives, the Dnipro Delta, and the world have
already heard of Askania-Nova or the largest
man-made forest.

Що спадає на думку українців коли їх
запитують про Херсон? Без сумнуіву, В Україні
Херсонська область асоціюється з кавунами,
динями та морем. Європейці знають про
Олешківські піски, острів Джариглач та дельту
Дніпра, а в світі хіба що й чули про Асканію-
Нову або найбільший рукотворний ліс.

 It seems that only these historical town

markers are the key to identify Kherson
region. But it’s not necessarily true. A
good few of our
countrymans/compatriots have
become renown not only in Ukraine but
in all corners of the world. They made a
difference in the world- one went into
space , another made a contribution
to the development of science, let
alone those who created new states.
we must know them because, as we
speak “ A generation which ignores
history has no past and no future”.

During years of independence up until the

Russian invasion, Kherson was a major agricultural
, industrial, trade, educational and cultural
center. It is the 16th most populous city in
Ukraine. Its symbols include the Gates of the
Kherson Fortress, one of which is depicted on the
modern coat of arms of the city, and a
monument to The First Shipbuilders, located on
the city embankment.
