1. Preliminary Activity
Introduction: Good morning class!
How are you today? I know you are
excited to learn as much as I do! Today
we are going to discuss -The three basic
food groups.
Good Morning, Ma’am!
But before we proceed with our class
let’s always make it a habit to pray and
thank God for giving us this day.
Prayer: May I ask everyone to pls
stand and let us put ourselves in the
Holy presence of Lord. (Prayer) Pls be
seated.
Review: Before we proceed with our
new topic, let us have a recall of our past
lesson. What is our last lesson?
Now, does anybody here know the
definition of nutrition? Amen!

It is all about Nutrition

Very well said, Carl. Nutrition is
focused on the relationship of food to Nutrition is the study of food in
health. relation to health and the

of food intake and the
utilization of the food by the
living organism.

Exactly, Sheila. Nutrients are

chemical components that regulate life
processes. Lastly, differentiate the Nutrients are a chemical
essential and non-essential nutrients? component needed by the
body. It has 3 general functions:
to provide energy, to build and
repair tissue and to regulate life
process.

Well-explained, Rizel. Essential

nutrients are nutrients needed in our Essential nutrients are needed
diet while non-essential are those not in the diet because you don’t
necessarily needed to be in our diet. have the precursors to produce
it on your own while non-
essential – is not important to
be taken up in the diet because
you may produce it despite of
deficiencies.
1a. Activity

Today we are going to tackle about the

three basic food groups

Motivation:
But Before we get started let us try this
activity. Can you arrange these letters to
create word or words?
ENERGY
Number 1: YENGRE
BODY BUILDING
Number 2 YODB GINDULIB
REGULATING
Number 3: GUETLAINGR
What are the words you arranged?

That’s right! You have already learnt

about the nutrients, their functions
and food sources. Now you must be
wondering what are food groups.
Based on the functions that are
performed by various types of food
items available? In this lesson, we will
study the different food groups and
you will learn that selection of right
food which makes a balanced meal,
results in good health.

Activity 1: 24 Hour Food Recall

In our first activity, you will have to list Learners will list all the food they

2. Analysis

Okay class, group yourselves into 3

groups.
Is everyone already settled? Okay. So, I
got here these pictures, and some
questions.
I want all of you to cooperate with each
other and choose one representative who
will present it in front of the class.

Now based on the picture:

Each group will present according
Process Questions: to their food plate assessment.
1. Compare the two-food plate in the
picture.

2. Do you think these two food plates are

complete or balanced meal? Why or why
not?
(The students will share their insights.)

Thank you for all your active

participation.

We really can tell if a person is eating a

complete and balanced meal by just
looking at his food plate, Thus, we need
to know about the three basic food
groups which introduces us to our lesson
for this day.
3. Abstraction

Discussion

There are several types of food items

and each type cannot be studied
individually.
Therefore, they have been categorized
into different food groups. This
grouping has
been done on the basis of the nutrient
content of each food.

Before I continue the discussion who

among you is familiar with the three
basic food groups kindly please stand
.
Students will share their ideas of
 Please share your idea about the three what they know about the three

 Nice one. You may all take your seats.

It seems like many of you are already
familiar about three basic food groups
while some have already forgotten.

Let’s learn about three basic

food groups

1.GO FOOD GROUP (Energy giving

food)
Go foods contain carbohydrates and
fats that give our bodies the energy we
need to meet the demands of our more
active lifestyles.
The energy found in food is called
calorie. Calories give our bodies the
energy to fuel activities.
The more active we are the more calorie
we need. The main source of calories
in our diet comes from Go foods.
Examples of Go foods are rice, bread,
corn, pasta, noodles, kakanin and root
Students will cite examples of Go
crops.
foods
Who can give more examples of Go
foods? (Call 2-3 students)

Cereals like rice, wheat and maize form

the main component of our diet. As
they are consumed in large quantities,
they become the main source of
energy in our diet.

2.GROW FOOD GROUP (Body building

food) repairs and build our body cells
and tissues. It makes us grow

Food rich in protein are:

Meat (pork, beef, chicken)
Seafood and fish
Egg
Plant Sources: (tofu, nuts, beans and
legumes)
Milk and dairy products (Yogurt and
cheese)

It is important that we get our protein

from different sources, and not just one
or two because different sources have
different kinds of amino acid.
Amino acids are molecules that
combine to form proteins.
(Name)JIBBY JIM S. PANIAMOGAN Educ 5 (Principles of Teaching 1)

Amino acids and proteins are the
building blocks of life.
That is why we should always consider
to eat Grow foods from different foods
rich in protein.

3. GLOW FOOD GROUP (regulatory

and protective food) Glow foods are
rich in minerals and vitamins.
they regulate and protect our body.
Vitamins and minerals help support the
nutritional requirements of our rapidly
developing bodies and our active
lifestyles.

The nutrient that we get from glow

foods:
Helps to keep our skin clear and hair
healthy so we can always look our best
Keeps our eyes healthy, to help us when
we need to read and study hard
And it also helps prevent sickness like
colds and cough so that we don’t miss
out an special events with our family and
friends

Regulating foods are green leafy

vegetables, yellow fruits and
vegetables, like: mongo sprouts, , Student will give more examples of
kangkong, malunggay, kalabasa, fruits and vegetables
eggplant, okra, citrus fruits, guava,
banana, papaya and

Who can give more example of Glow

foods? (Call 2-3 students)
Very good! That’s correct! Student will give an answer based
on their assessment about the food
item
How about avocado? Which food group
does avocado belong?
Answer: Go foods – high in fats
What about coconut? (meat)
Answer: Go foods- considered as high in
fats

We should always choose Glow foods

that have a wide variety of color
Different colored fruits and vegetables
contain different nutrients, so eating a
wide variety of fruits and vegetables
ensures that we are getting a wide
range of nutrients

Okay! Do yo have any questions so far?

Student will give an answer based
BALANCE DIET on their knowledge about balance
diet
Now that you are familiar with the food

groups, let us learn about a balanced
diet.

But How do we achieve a balance diet?

(calls 2-3 students)

In a meal, if we include food items from

all the food groups then our body will
be able to get all the nutrients
collectively, such a meal is called a
Balanced Diet.
A balanced diet is one which contains
all the nutrients in adequate quantity
to meet
the body’s requirements and some
amount of nutrients are stored in the
body to
withstand short period of low intake.

Let us take a look in the Pinggang Pinoy

which was modeled by FNRI-DOST.

Pinggang Pinoy – is an easy-to-

understand food guide that reminds us
of what our meal should look like each
day

According to Pinggang Pinoy :

¼ of our plate should consist of Go
foods
¼ from grow foods
½ is from glow foods

If we make each meal a pinggang pinoy

we will get the energy and nutrients
our bodies need to be healthy.

Remember to:

Eat Most – Vegetables and fruits to

keep us healthy
Eat More - Cereals and grains that gives
us energy
Eat Moderately - Meat, fish, egg and
alternatives (including dry beans) and
milk and alternatives to keep our body
strong
Eat Less - Fat/ oil, salt and sugar to
store energy
Drink adequate amount of fluid
(including water, tea, clear soup, etc)

every day

After learning the different food groups

and what is a balance diet let us apply
what we have learned today by
Assessing your family meals using the
“Pinggang Pinoy” as a guide to find
out whether your meals
are balanced or not.
Do you realize how much effort your
parents make to serve balanced meals
to the family?
4. Application

Going back to our 24-hour recall

activity.
Categorize these food items into
different food groups.
Analyze and discuss whether you ate
balanced meals or not.

Previous day’s diet

Student will present their 24-hour

food recall assessment.
Okay time is up! Now let us present our
24-hour food recall.

Select 3-5 students to present their 24-

hour food recall assessment.

Well-explained students. Do you have

any questions?

Well, if that’s the case, please get ¼

sheet of paper and let’s have a very short
quiz.

(The teacher answers the quiz, gives the

assignment, and dismisses the class.)
