What is the importance of understanding each type of children’s literature towards teaching
English to primary and beginning learners?

The importance of understanding each type of children’s literature for us to classify what
type or appropriate literature is in need to teach in a particular student according on their age and
learning capability. Students have differences in learning needs, skills and ability. By
understanding each literature or genres of literature, we teachers or soon to be teachers will able
to recognize the appropriate literature that is suitable for the development or enhancement of the
child’s ability.

The teacher will give a chance for the children to understand and appreciate the different
cultures through this literature. It will guide for the teacher what type of literature he/she needs to
bring in the class as a strategy to motivate them for better understanding with the regards of their
age, learning needs and ability. Like for example, if the students are good for poem then the
teacher will use the poetry literature for them to nurture their talent and creativity. Each type of
literature has different nature and characteristics which children are may be suitable for one type
of literature and other for another type, to harness their ability, talent and creativity in different
ways based on the different type of literature.
