A. Reviewing Past lesson or Last meeting we have tackled
Presenting the new lesson. about, what?

Yes Claire?
We discussed about Equation and
Expression
Very good!

What is an Expression?
Yes, Diana?
An expression is a mathematical
phrase combining numbers and/or
variables using mathematical
operations
kindly give me an example of an
expression Charles

great! x²-2x

What about Equation?

Yes, Patrick? Equation is a mathematical
sentences that combines numbers
and/or variables that shows the
equality of two expressions.

C. Presenting Examples/ Aldrin works for a company that
Instances of the new lesson Remodels kitchens. In one kitchen,
he builds the rectangular island
shown below. What is the size of the
granite tiles that he needs to cover
its countertop?

6 feet

2.5 feet

To find the size of the granite tiles ,

we need to find the area of
rectangle , multiply the length by the
width.
Area = length x width

Now try to solve or find the area

using the formula.

Area = 6ft x 2.5 ft

2
Now what is the size of the granite Area = 15 ft
tiles that he needs to cover its
countertop?

(raised hand) 15 ft 2 teacher

Very good! Let’s now move on with
our discussion

D. Discussing new concepts So what do you think our topic for

and practicing new skills No. 1 today is all about?
Anyone from the class? (raised hand)
Yes, Datu?
I think teacher, we are going to find
the area of shapes.
Brilliant!
What kind of shapes will it may be?
(raised a hand)

Rectangle teacher
Very good!
Some more?
(raised a hand)

Square teacher
Awesome!
Is there anything more?

(raised a hand)

Triangle teacher
Very good!

So today we are going to discuss

about the Area of Composite
Figures.

What is area?

Area is the number of square units

needed to cover the surface of a
plane figure

Now let’s proceed how to solve

rectangle.

Area of a Rectangle

The area of a rectangle is the

product of the length (l) and width
( w).

Formula:
A= l x w

3
m

8m

In getting the length and the width,

always put on your mind that length
is longer than the width.

Lets try to find the area of rectangle

A= l•w
A= l•w
=8m •3m
=8m •3m
A=24 m 2
2
A=24 m

We read “24 m2” as “24 square

meters”

Area of a Square

A=s x s ,or A= s2

For example

Side = 10 cm

Since the square has a congruent or

same side therefore each side has 10
cm each.

Area of a square = Side × Side

square units
Thus, Area = 10 × 10 = 100 cm2
Therefore, the area of a square is 100
cm2 if its side length is 10 cm Yes teacher.
Did you get how to solve for the
area of square?

that’s great!

Now try to solve for this :

Find the area of square with sides A= s x s

12 cm.
=12 cm x 12 cm

A=144 cm 2
Area of a triangle

1
A= xbxh
2

For us to find the area of a tri-sided

polygon, we have to know the base
(b) and height (h) of it.

Base is located at the bottom part of

the figure and base is the
measurement from base to top.

For example :

The base of this figure is 18 and the

height is 6

1
A= •b•h
2
1
A= • 18 • 6
2

18 x 6
A=
2

=54

AREA OF COMPOSITE FIGURE

A composite figure is made up of

simple geometric shapes. To find
the area of a composite figure or
other irregular-shaped figure,

1.  Divide it into simple,

nonoverlapping figures.
2.  Find the area of each
simpler figure,
3. Add the areas together to
find the total area of the
composite figure.
For example:

Find the area of each shaded

region. Assume that all angles that
appear to be right angles are right
angles.

6 cm

7cm

To solve for this figure we can

separate into two a triangle and a
square. Now let us find the area of
each figure

Area of Triangle

6cm

7 cm

1
A= xbxh
2

1
= x 7 cm x 6 cm
2

1
= x 42 cm 2
2

A= 21 cm 2
Area of Square

7 cm

A= s x s

= 7 cm x 7 cm

= 49 cm 2

We can see that area of

21cm 2 + 49 cm 2

Therefore, the area of the composite

figure is 70 cm 2.

E. Discussing New concepts This time I am going to group you

and practicing new skills into 4 groups.
No. 2 Each group will have an envelope
that contains figures to solve. We
call this activity as “ I got you”
Each group will help the envelope
to solve for the figures inside.

H. Making Generalization What is composite figure? Composite figure is a figure that we

and abstraction about the can break and form more than one
lesson. basic shape.
If you see composite figure what will
you do to solve for its are?
First, we’ll break the shape into basic
shapes and then solve for its areas
After you solve the area of the basic
shapes , what will you do next?
I will add the areas of the basic
shapes.
