Water Temperature Regulator - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service

Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTICE
Coolant flow is balanced (fined tuned) by the placement of various size
orifices in the cooling circuit. These are strategically placed to provide
correct balance and flow. Do not change the position or the size of the
orifices.

1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".

2. Disconnect the coolant outlet from elbow (3) .

3. Remove bolts (4) and the washer that holds tube (5) in place in the water temperature regulator
housing.

4. Remove the bolts and the washers that hold tube (5) in place in the water pump and remove
tube (5) .

5. Remove tube assembly (2) .

6. Remove elbows (1) and (6) from the water temperature regulator housing.

7. Remove tube (10) from the water temperature regulator housing and from the oil cooler.

8. Remove the bolts that hold flanges (7) in place. Remove the flanges and the tube.

9. Attach a suitable lifting device to water temperature regulator housing (8) . The weight of
water temperature regulator housing (8) is approximately 79 kg (174 lb). Remove the bolts

that hold water temperature regulator housing (8) to fuel filter housing (9) and remove the
water temperature regulator housing from the engine.

10. Water temperature regulator housing (8) can be installed backward. This can cause the engine
to overheat. Mark the correct orientation for installation purposes. Water temperature regulator
housing (8) has a boss that is assembled toward the rear of the engine.

11. Remove housing (11) and the gasket from housing (12) .

12. Position the water temperature regulator housing in order to ensure that housing (12) faces
downward.

13. Remove the nuts and cover (13) from housing (12) .

14. Remove gasket (16) and water temperature regulators (15) from housing (12) .

15. Remove studs (14) from housing (12) .

1. Use Tooling (A) in order to install lip seals (17) in housing (12) . Ensure that the lips of the
seals are facing downward.

2. Install studs (14) in housing (12) . Tighten the studs to a torque of 30 ± 5 N·m (22 ± 4 lb ft).

3. Install water temperature regulators (15) in housing (12) .

4. Place gasket (16) in position on housing (12) .

5. Place cover (13) in position on housing (12) and install the nuts that hold the cover in place.

6. Put the gasket and housing (11) in place on housing (12) and install the bolts that hold the
housing in place.

water temperature regulator housing (8) is approximately 79 kg (174 lb). Place the water
temperature regulator housing in position on fuel filter housing (9) and install the bolts.

8. Install the tube and flanges (7) .

9. Install tube (10) .

10. Install elbows (1) and (6) .

11. Install tube assembly (2) .

12. Place tube (5) in position in the water pump and the water temperature regulator housing.

13. Install the bolts and washers that hold tube (5) in place in the water pump.

14. Install bolts (4) and the washers.

15. Connect the coolant outlet to elbow (3) .

16. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling
System Coolant (ELC) - Change".
