A. Definition of Yes-No Question

In linguistics, a yes–no question, also known as a binary question, a polar question,


or a general question, is a question whose expected answer is one of two choices, one
that provides an affirmative answer to the question versus one that provides a negative
answer to the question. Typically, in English, the choices are either "yes" or "no". Yes–
no questions present an exclusive disjunction, namely a pair of alternatives of which
only one is a felicitous answer. In English, such questions can be formed in both
positive and negative forms
• positive yes/no question: "Will you be here tomorrow?"
• negative yes/no question: "Won't you be here tomorrow?"1

B. Make the Sentence Yes-No Question

The way to make the sentence Yes-No Question is by adding “do/ did”, move the
auxiliary verb/ modal verb to front of sentence.
1. Add do, does and did in front of sentences
Add do/ does in front of sentences, if the sentence is simple present.
example: Do you speak English?
Does he speak English?
Add did in front of the sentence, if the sentence is simple past.
example: Did he come here last week?
Did you call me last night?
Did he study English yesterday?
2. Put be and auxiliary verbs in front of the sentence
There are two segments that need to be recognized carefully namely:
First, move be (are, am, is, was, were) forward.
example: Am I lazy?

Are you happy?
Is she a bad girl?
Were they there last night?
Was he disappointed yesterday?
Second, move the auxiliary verb forward. This verb consists of two types, namely:
1. Have, has, had
2. Modal verb (will, would, can, could, etc.)
example:
Have, has, had Modal verb
Have you eaten? Will I come?
Has she been there? Can she do it?
Had she studied before you came? Should they go?

C. Response to the sentence Yes-No Question


To response to this sentence, actually you don’t only need use the words yes and no,
but you can also use several alternative answer, including:
1. Positive response
• Yes
• Yup
• Absolutely
• Of course
• Okay
• Yeah
2. Negative response
• No
• Nope
• Never
• No way
Examples of response variation:
1. Will you speak English

Words. Often called WH-Questions because all question words begin with WH-, except
