Guidelines for acceptance of gauge repeatability and reproducability (% R & R) MSA-6

1.Under 10 % error = The measurement system is acceptable. PAGE 1 OF 3

2.10 % to 30 % error = may be acceptable based upon importance of application, cost of gauge,

3.Cost of repairs etc.Over 30 % error= measurement system needs improvement.

Make every effort to identify the problems and have them corrected.

Points for justification to accept the gauge under deviation : ( Tick mark the reason and provide data if applicable)

1 Gauge application is not much important as automatic correction exists.

2 Cost of replacing the gauge is too high.

3 Cost of repairing the gauge is too high.

4 Process Capability is more than 2.5, hence R & R % (10-30%) can be considered as acceptable

on deviation
This should be equal or
more than 5
If R&R% is equal or more than 30% then following analysis to be carried out and
and to have the action plan to get R&R within acceptable limit.

case I If repeatability is comparatively higher than reproducabililty, identify causes related to instrument / equipment

a) The instrument may need maintenance

b) The Gauge may have to be redesigned to be more rigid

c) Clamping or location for gauging needs to be improved.

case II If reproducability is comparatively higher than repeatability, use graphical method and identify following causes

a) The appraiser needs to be better trained in how to use and read the gauge / instrument.

b) Calibrations on the gauge dial are not clear.

c) Fixture of some sort may be needed to help the appraiser use the gauge more consistently.

Guideline
If all the individual ranges are within control limits, all appraisers are consistent and
are using the gauge in the same ways.

Conclusion Acceptable
Guideline for analysis of Average Chart :
The area within the control limits represents the measurement discrimination ("noise"). Since the group of parts used in the study represents the process variation,
approximately one half or more of the averages should fall outside the control limits. If the data shows this pattern, then the measurement system should be
considered adequate to detect part to part variation and measurement system can provide useful information for analyzing and controlling the process. If less than
half fall out side the limit , then either the measurement system has inadequate discrimination or the sample does not represent the expected process variation.

Conclusion : The percentage of points beyond the control limits = 0% So gage is adequate.

The measurement system has inadequate discrimination or the sample does not represent the expected process variation.
