Calorimetry

Objectives:
1. To determine whether a reaction is exothermic or endothermic using temperature
changes
2. To understand the fundamentals of a calorimeter
3. To determine the calorimeter constant or heat capacity of an improvised calorimeter

Apparatus and Materials:

2 250mL beaker 2 styrofoam cups 1 wire gauze
1 100mL graduated cylinder cardboard 1 iron stand
1 watch glass aluminum foil
1 top loading balance vinegar
1 thermometer baking soda
1 Bunsen burner rubber band

The working equation for a calculating the heat capacity of a calorimeter is:

To calculate the heat capacity of the calorimeter, calculate the changes in temperature of the hot
water, Tfa = Tf - Ta
To solve the specific heat of the solution, use the formula:
