The movie tells the story of our first hero here in the Philippines. The movie starts on a
battle scene between two armies on a seashore on the island of Mactan. One army is led by
Lapu-Lapu and the other is led by Humabon. The groups of Humabon was defeated and he
escapes with a wound at the stomach caused by Lapu-Lapu. Lapu-Lapu’s groups spend the night
resting from exertions during the battle. The babaylan performs a ritual for the dead bodies of the
companions of Lapu-Lapu and they offer a chicken to the spirits.
At night Datu Zula and his companions decided to create a commotion between them and
Lapu-Lapu. They took and sold the tribes of Lapu-Lapu to enslave them. Later then, Lapu-Lapu
discovered this crime of Datu Zula so he informed his armies to secretly wait at the seashore and
hide. The battle begins and in the end the armies of Datu Zula have been defeated. Also, the
slaves have been freed from the hands of those bourgeois.
An identified ship was discovered by the children who were just having a swim in the
sea. The ship started to fire cannons in the island and the children started to run and tell to Rajah
Humabon and his wife about this. Later on, the people on the ship discovered that there are
people in the island so they stopped firing cannons. Ferdinand and its armies ride on a boat to go
near the island, they informed Rajah Humabon that the firing means that they want to trade.
Magellan convinced Rajah Humabon and his wife to be baptized into Catholicism and later
offered them Santo Nino. But then Lapu-Lapu opposed the proposal of Magellan about the
spices that they want and that caused a big battle between them.
In the end, Magellan was killed where his head has been cut by Lapu-Lapu. The other
companions of Magellan fled the island afraid of being killed by the tribes of Lapu-Lapu. Rajah
Humabon wants to get the body of Magellan and his companions but Lapu-Lapu didn’t accept
the offer because he wants to bury the bodies as a sign of their success in the battle. Although
Lapu-Lapu wins the fight he was killed by the companion of Datu Zula and the wife of Lapu-
Lapu gave birth to a cute baby.
In my opinion the strength of this movie is they portrayed all the stories between Lapu-
Lapu and Magellan. Its weakness is there is no subtitle when they started speaking Spanish. Even
though someone is translating it in Filipino, the voice is weak and not very understood.
The character that I find stunning is Lapu-Lapu. The scene that I love the most that made
me loved him is when he captured the rapist and informed its tribe that women are loved and
cared for. This shows the personality trait that I like for men. Then, it strikes me that the director
wants us to know that we Filipino’s are brave through making the movie of the legend history of
our first hero LAPU-LAPU.
I rated this movie as 80 because the film is blurry. The actors did very good in acting but
it is weak in the production sets and also their props. The scene where Lapu-Lapu cut the head of
Magellan, you can literally see that it is fake. They should add some edits on the body where the
head was removed so that it should look real. Musical scoring and cinematography were good
but there are scenes that is hard to see because it has not enough lighting specially when it’s
night time in the set.
