My car honked, shattering the evening silence of this village in the rural Vietnam's
Quang Tii province. The noise set offthe Mai family's pet dog. It sprinted to the front
of the cement-walled house, barking heartily at me.
A couple greeted me at the doqr. The husband was Mai Cong Tun and the wife
was Nguyen Thi Quynh. After a handshake, they led me into their house. In the living
room, there were three brothers - Mai Cong Ttuyen, rr, Mai Cong Khoa, eighg and
Mai Cong Tung, four. They lied motionlesslyand quietly on the mattress, though they
seemed confused by *y sudden visit. All three brothers were born deaf and paralysed.
The doctors blamed their conditions on the lingering effects of Agent Orange, is a toxic
herbicide used by the United States military during the Vietnam war.
The couple eked out a living as scrap metal collectors. Of their four children,
only one was born healthy - their daughter Mai Kim Chi. "We were confused because
we do not have a family history of congenital disorders. I am sure it is the effect of
Agent Orange," said the boys' mother. "We cannot afford to seek treatments for my
sons. I'm worried about their future. I hope that they would die before me," said the
heart-breaking father.
During the Vietnam war, the US army sprayed about 75 million litres of Agent
Orange directly over Quang Tri province. The US army had wanted to destroy food
crops and defoliate thick jungle vegetation so that the Vietnamese army would run
out of food and lose their cover. Atthough Vietnam War ended 44years ago, millions
of Vietnamese are still living with the effects of Agent Orange. Hatfield Consultants,
a Canadian environmental consultancy predicted that Vietnam might see another
12 more generations of Agent Orange victims before the effects of Agent Orange
disappears.
Although all signs point to Agent Orange as the source of poisoning in Quang Tii,
the courts in the United States still ruled that there was insufficient scientific evidence
to link Agent Orange to the debilitating condition of many Vietnamese. Therefore, the
US government and the company that produced Agent Orange were not obliged to
compensate the victims. Looking at the plight of the couple and other victims, I felt
helpless and sad. I dont know when Quang Tri will move on from the effects of the
war, but I wish the families there will get to lead normal lives one day in the future.

For several decades, there was a prevailing vier.v that pets provided health
benefits such as
increased psychological well-being and could even make p.opt.
live longer. However, this view has
been contentious. Sorne research has shown that while peis do increase
some aspects
of health, they
do more harm than good. There are many diseases associated
with pets such as rabies, psittacosis
and giardiasis.
