SHEET (3)
Potential Flow (2009)

1. Obtain an expression for the stream function for the following cases:
a)A uniform flow with a velocity of 5 m/s parallel to the positive direction of the x-axis.
b)A uniform flow with a velocity of 10 m/s parallel to the positive direction of the y-axis.
c) The resulting from the combination of (a) and (b).

2. (a) Determine which of the following expressions represent irrotational flow:

i- u = Ax2 + Bx3 , v = Ax + B siny
ii- u = Ay2 + By , v = Ax2/2 + 2Byx
(b) A (2-D) flow field is defined by u = xt + 2y and v = xt2 find the total acceleration at a
point x = 1 m, y = 1 m, and t = 1 sec. Is the flow rotational or irrotational?

3. An incompressible velocity field is given by : V = a(x2-y2)i + (-2axy)j

Find the stream function ψ, if the flow is irrotational find the velocity potential φ.

4. A source of strength 2 (m3/s)/m is located at origin and another source of strength 3

(m3/s)/m is located at (2,0). Find the velocity components at (2,3).

5. obtain the equation of the dividing streamline for the flow resulting from a superposition
of a free-stream at 20 m/s on a two dimensional source with a strength of 62.83
(m3/s)/m. Sketch the flow pattern.

6. Flow over a plane half-body is studied by utilizing a free-stream at 5 m/s superimposed

on a source at the origin. The body has a maximum width 2 m. calculate:
a) The coordinates of the stagnation point.
b) The width of the body at the origin.
c) The velocity at a point (0.5, π/2).

7. A line source of discharge 3 (m3/s)/m is placed at the origin. If the free stream velocity
in the uniform flow is 5 m/s. find the position of stagnation point and the point on half
body where the pressure is equal to the static pressure.

8. A source of strength 0.2 (m3/s)/m and a vortex of strength 1 (m3/s)/m are located at the
origin. Determine the equations for the stream and potential functions. What are the
velocity components at x = 1m, y = 0.5 m.

9. Find the strength of doublet for a physical situation of 2m diameter cylinder in a

uniform flow of 10 m/s.

10. A circular cylinder 0.5 m diameter rotates at 600 rpm in a uniform stream of 15 m/s.
a) Locate the stagnation points.
b) Calculate the minimum rotational speed for detached stagnation points.
