Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus), locally known as pipino, is a member of

vi
RATIONALE

The Cucurbitaceae plant family is produced widely because of its high source of

nutrient content like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. (Ened et al.,2016). Cucumber is

an important vegetable crop (Stepien and Klobus 2006).

The cucumber is a warm-temperature vine vegetable it is grown widely in the

Philippines all year round, and its production has increased with an average annual rate of

2.79% from 2003 to 2017 (Knoema, 2018). The demand for cucumbers, as well as related

the small green fruit of a plant, in the country is continuing to rise as food manufacturers,

such as Unilever, use this crop as the main ingredient of one of their leading products, the

Lady’s Choice Mayonnaise and Spreads (Arreza,2020).

Economically cucumbers are very important, as cucumbers contain high

nutritional, medicinal as well as health beneficial values. Cucumber is a healthy fruit that

has lots of benefits. Cucumber regulates hydration and maintains adequate blood pressure

and sugar, soothes skin, helped in digestion, reduces fat, and helps weight loss

( IntecOpen, 2021).

Seaweed fertilizers are organic plant feeds containing extracts of seaweed

sustainably derived from the ocean. Containing beneficial nutrients such as magnesium,

potassium, nitrogen, and more. Domestically, seaweed fertilizers are most commonly used

by gardeners who wish to avoid animal-derived or chemical fertilizers, whilst cultivating the

long-term benefits of organic gardening. (AO Tursun 2022)

1
General Objectives

To establish cucumber production at Purok Sampaguita, Bagong Silang,

Maragusan, Davao de Oro using seaweed fertilizer.

Specific Objectives

1. To distinguish the yield and profitability of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) using

seaweed fertilizer.

2. To determine the Return on Investment (ROI) of cucumber production within a

1,000 square meters area.

2
DESCRIPTION OF THE ENTERPRISE

Business Description

The cucumber production will be known as Nacio's Cucumber Production,

owned and managed by the project manager Mr. Cesar Jade T. Ignacio, a student of

Davao De Oro State College Maragusan Branch. The project will start on November 10,

2022, to April 22, 2023 at Purok Sampaguita, Bagong Silang, Maragusan, Davao de Oro.

The total production area is 1,000 square meters with 16 lots and 2,000 hills.

Science and Technology

Seaweed extract also enhances crop yields, promotes plant resilience to frost and

disease, stimulates inorganic ingredient intake from the soil, improves stress resistance, and

minimizes fruit storage losses. Seaweed contains almost every micro-nutrient in a fully

chelated (immediately available) form. It is also full of carbohydrates, which plants use as a

building block. Seaweed also contains several other substances called bio-stimulants which

are claimed to help plants grow, ward off disease, and produce higher crop yields. The bio-

stimulants in seaweed fertilizer might be more valuable than the NPK nutrient. Given the

high cost of seaweed extract, it’s important to know if these bio-stimulants work. Seaweed

has readily available nutrients such as nitrogen, magnesium, potassium, and phosphate. It

also has other hormones that boost plant growth. Some university studies show that using

seaweed as a fertilizer can increase the yield of potatoes, strawberries, tomatoes, corn, and

cucumbers by up to 40%. In addition, the plants suffered less from softening and rotting.

The study suggested that seaweed fertilizer could be the most applicable and should be

widely used in the agriculture industry, as the seed germination rates and root and shoot

elongation were observed high. These fertilizers would lessen the impacts on the

environment. Seaweed fertilizers are among the best modern sustainable biological plant

growth promoters. They have been proven to eliminate plant diseases and abiotic stresses,

leading to maximizing yields. Additionally, they have been listed as environmentally friendly

biofertilizers. (Agriculture Science, 2021).

Product

MEGA C F1 was popular not only as a food source but also because of its

beneficial skin-healing properties. Rich in minerals and vitamins A, B, C, and E, cucumber

has a cooling effect, helping to calm irritations, revitalize the skin, and gently soothe delicate

areas of skin like the lips and around the eyes. Cucumbers are also 96% water so are great

to incorporate into your diet to keep hydration levels up. This high water content helps your

body flush out any built-up toxins as well.

Market Opportunity

Cucumber is a good source of income, especially for small farmers. It can be

profitable and cultivated any time of the year. Cucumber is one of the most highly

competitive vegetables regardless of the month of production.

PRODUCTION AND OPERATION REPORT

Land Clearing

8
The land cleaning will be done manually using a bolo and grass hook. The land

was thoroughly prepared by clearing and slashing twice.

Land Preparation

Land preparation will be done through harrowing and farrowing using the

traditional method. Land preparation is important to produce aeration to soil and can

penetrate easing the roots into the soil.

Sowing of Seeds

Sowing of seeds will be done early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid

stress. There will be 1,600 cucumber seeds will be sowed in the area manually following

the recommended planting distance.

Application of Foliar Fertilizer

Seaweed foliar fertilizer application will be done by manual spraying. Seaweed

foliar fertilizer will be sprayed on the cucumber to enhance its growth and fruit development

of the cucumber.

Granular Fertilizer Application

Granular fertilizers application will be done manually. The application of fertilizers

will be based on the result of the soil analysis.

Pest and Disease Management

9
Pest and disease management will be done manually by spraying a pesticides,

fungicides, etc. This management is necessary to ensure the area is free from diseases and

pest to secure the quality of crops.

Weeding

Weeding will be done manually. Weeding will be performed if it is necessary using

a bolo and grass hook.

Harvested

Harvesting will be done manually through handpicking. Harvesting will be done

every two days at three days intervals. Also, harvesting will be done early morning and late

afternoon or when the temperature is suitable.

Sorting

Sorting will be done manually after harvesting. Sorting of eggplant will be done by

removing its damaged fruits which will not be included in marketing.

Weighing

Weighing will be done manually after harvest. Weighing is important to determine the

weight of the cucumber before selling.

Packaging

10
The packaging of cucumbers will be packed using strong cartons of corrugated

board with plastic film lining. The sides of the cartons are reinforced and provided with

perforations.

Grading

Grading will be done manually using visual appearance. It will be graded according

to the size, color, and shape of the fruit. Table 1. Shows the grading of cucumbers.

Table 1. The size and color of the vegetable and the percent of ripe cucumber are classified
through the following classification.
Grading Classification

Class A The large size of the same color and shape.

Class B Medium size fruits of the same color and shape.
